Methods and devices for determining a joint line position are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a method includes: providing a femoral trial component, the femoral trial component comprising an anterior flange and at least one mark on the anterior flange of the femoral trial component to indicate a desired patellofemoral contact point in extension; referencing the mark on the femoral trial component during a surgical procedure to assist in determining a proper superior-inferior joint line position between a tibial prosthetic component and a femoral prosthetic component; installing the femoral prosthetic component based at least in part on the determination of the proper superior-inferior joint line position between the tibial component and the femoral component; installing the tibial prosthetic component based at least in part on the determination of the proper superior-inferior joint line position; and completing the surgical procedure with the femoral component and tibial component in proper position is described.

A method for performing shoulder arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty is provided. The method includes generating navigational reference information relating to position and orientation of a body part forming at least a portion of the shoulder joint. The reference information may be stored in a computer. Navigational references are attached to the body part and an object. Information is received regarding the position and orientation of the object with respect to the body part and the object is navigated according to this information. The body part may be modified using the object and the modification may be displayed on a monitor associated with the computer. The navigational references may be used to track a shoulder arthroplasty trial component. Information is received regarding the position and orientation of the trial component with respect to the body part. This information is used to navigate the trial component to the body part.

A knee prosthesis is provided that allows for increased flexion. The knee prosthesis includes (a) a femoral component adapted to fit on a distal end of the femur which includes a lateral condylar structure and a medial condylar structure and (b) an intermediate structure configured to cooperate with a femoral component of a knee prosthesis. The intermediate structure includes at least one surface for contacting the femoral component and a transition of a sagittal curvature of the at least one contact surface from a concave surface into a convex surface at the contact interface of the femoral component and the intermediate structure when the knee is flexed at approximately 120° to 140°. The knee prosthesis minimizes impingement on the femoral posterior cortex in deep flexion, increases the dislocation safety factor and allows for easier reengagement of the articular surface should the femoral component externally rotate off of the tibial plateau.
