Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to implement power supply units (PSUs) that are capable of operating on input power having different types of input voltage waveforms, including, but not limited to, pure sinusoidal waveforms, non-pure sinusoidal waveforms, and non-sinusoidal waveforms. Such a PSU may operate to continue supplying DC output power to a system load as long as the PSU is powered by any one of a variety of such different input power types, while at the same time also effectively monitoring for presence of input power provided to the PSU and shutting down the PSU in event of absence or termination of the input power to the PSU. Such a PSU may also automatically identify and adapt to changes between different types of input power while at the same time continuing to supply DC output power to a system load in an uninterrupted manner for as long as some type of input power is being provided to the PSU.

Abstract: A power supply unit for an information handling system, including a filter module configured to filter an AC voltage signal; a rectifier module to rectify the filtered AC voltage signal to generate a DC voltage signal, the DC voltage signal proportional to the AC voltage signal; a voltage regulator module configured to determine that the DC voltage signal is above a threshold voltage level, and in response, clamp the DC voltage signal such that the clamped DC voltage signal i) is not proportional to the AC voltage signal and ii) is less than the threshold voltage level; a capacitor module to average peaks voltages of the clamped DC voltage signal; and a DC/DC converter to convert the averaged DC voltage signal to a converted DC voltage signal, the converted DC voltage signal having a desired DC voltage level.

Abstract: A zero voltage switching method for a flyback converter featuring a transformer with first and second primary windings and corresponding turns ratios, N1 and N2, includes rectifying and filtering an AC signal to produce a primary DC voltage. A voltage level signal indicating whether the primary DC voltage falls within a particular voltage range is generated. The voltage level signal is used to select a particular primary winding from either the first primary winding or the second primary winding. A PWM controller corresponding to the particular primary winding is activated and an output of the particular PWM controller performs zero voltage switching of a gate terminal of the applicable main switching transistor. A duty cycle of the main switching transistor is maintained within a range of approximately 50% to approximately 60% in accordance with the turns ratio and the primary DC voltage to achieve a desired output voltage.

Abstract: Described are system and methods for maximizing charging power to an information handling system (IHS) from a programmable power supply (PPS). The IHS and the PPS initiate communication with one another. Information is exchanged as to the capabilities of the PPS for providing charging power to battery cells of the IHS, and information as to the battery cells of the HIS. Charging power from the PPS based on the configuration and capability of the battery cells of the IHS, and charging power is kept at a maximum power throughout charging of the battery cells.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides embodiments of direct current (DC) power connectors and methods to manufacture the same. More specifically, the present disclosure provides a connector plug with improved power capacity and structural rigidity. The connector plug includes an inner body and an outer body coupled to transmit power through the DC power connector, wherein the inner body is concentrically arranged within the outer body, and an insulating barrel that is coupled between the inner body and the outer body to electrically isolate the inner body from the outer body. The inner body and outer body comprise a base metal or metal alloy having an electrical conductivity ranging between 30% International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) and greater than or equal to 99% IACS. In addition, the inner body, outer body and insulating barrel comprise an inter-locking feature, which increases the structural rigidity of the connector plug and prevents disassembly when the inner body, outer body and insulated barrel are assembled together.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides various embodiments of an external power supply and methods to enhance the output power delivered by an external power supply to a power consuming load. As described in more detail below, the embodiments disclosed herein enable an external power supply to deliver a higher than maximum output power for short periods of time when ambient temperatures within the external power supply are low. As the ambient temperature increases, the embodiments disclosed herein throttle (or incrementally reduce) the output power delivered by the external power supply until the maximum output power specified for the power supply is reached. Although not strictly limited to such, the external power supply may be a Universal Serial Bus (USB)-enabled AC/DC adapter, and more specifically, a USB Power Deliver (USB-PD) AC/DC adapter, in some embodiments.

Abstract: In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a switch mode power supply may include a transformer, a controller configured to generate a periodic switching signal, a switching transistor coupled between a sense node and the transformer, primarily configured to prevent or permit current flow in the transformer primary winding in accordance with the switching signal, a sense resistor coupled to the switching transistor at a sense node, and a limit circuit configured to obtain a voltage of the sense node at a particular point of the switching period as an indicator of the primary winding current, detect a duration of a demagnetizing interval, and generate a limit signal, based on the sense node voltage and the demagnetizing interval, indicating a power supply output current exceeding a limit threshold.

Abstract: Systems and methods that may be implemented to automatically sense and verify proper mated orientation of a removable BGA package relative to a mating pad array (e.g., of a BGA socket) prior to supplying power to the BGA package. A removable BGA package may be provided with first and second symmetric pins so as to present different respective circuit states on opposing sides of a center point of its BGA package pin array, such that proper orientation of the BGA package occurs only when a designated one of the first and second symmetric pins is mated with a designated pad of the mating pad array. A programmable integrated circuit may in turn sense the circuit state presented at the designated pad to verify proper orientation of the mated BGA package based on the sensed circuit state presented at the designated pad, and may take one or more designated actions based on whether or not proper orientation of the mated BGA package is verified.
