Abstract: In an image generating apparatus, a setter is configured to variably set, for an image capturing task at a next capturing cycle, first and second shutter times and a total gain. The total gain is based on combination of an analog gain and a digital gain. An allocating unit is configured to obtain a threshold gain based on the first and second shutter times and a compression characteristic. The allocating unit is configured to variably allocate the total gain to at least one of the analog gain and the digital gain in accordance with a comparison among the total gain, the threshold gain, and an upper limit for the analog gain.

Abstract: In an image generating apparatus, an image combining unit combines, for each of first and second processes in sequence, first and second images to generate a composite image having a digital pixel value representing a luminance level of the corresponding pixel by a first bit width. A range setter sets, for each of the first and second processes, a target luminance-level distribution range of at least one target with respect to the composite image; the distribution range represents a range within which luminance levels of the at least one target are distributed. A dynamic range adjuster adjusts a dynamic range of the composite image generated for one of the first and second processes such that the dynamic range of the composite image generated for the corresponding one of the first and second processes matches with the target luminance-level distribution range set for the first process.

Abstract: An imaging device performs imaging using an imaging element. The imaging device is provided with an imaging unit, a control unit and a synthesis unit. The imaging unit performs exposure with a predetermined exposure time, thereby performing image capture. The control unit successively performs an imaging process N-times. In each imaging process, a plurality of images are captured with different exposure times. The synthesis unit generates, using HDR rendering, a plurality of images acquired by the plurality of image captures. The control unit performs one of the plurality of image captures such that the exposure is completed at a corresponding synchronous timing, and performs a subsequent other image capture such that exposure is started at the synchronous timing.

Abstract: A vehicle mountable camera is provided which includes an imaging device, an exposure controller, and an image processor. The imaging device is configured to be installed behind a windshield of a subject vehicle to capture an image of a forward view in front of the subject vehicle. The exposure controller controls the degree of exposure of the imaging device. The image processor executes an image processing operation on the captured image. The camera determines whether a brightness boundary exists in front of the subject vehicle and, when the brightness boundary is determined to exist, controls the exposure of the imaging device and/or adjustment of brightness of the image quickly when the subject vehicle passes the brightness boundary. This minimizes a risk that the captured image may be darkened or brightened suddenly immediately after the subject vehicle moves from a sunny area to a shaded area or vice versa.
