A high viscosity synthetic ester base stock of about ISO 68 to 400 is formed from a neopentylpolyol condensed with at least one monocarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of linear acids having between 4 to 10 carbon atoms and branched chain acids having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms in an excess of hydroxyl to carboxylic acid groups to form a partial polyneopentylpolyol ester that is further reacted with the same or similar acid to form a high viscosity polyneopentylpolyol ester. Lubricants formed from the base stocks have satisfactory miscibility with standard highly or fully fluorinated refrigeration fluids.

A polyol ester suitable for use as a lubricant or a lubricant base stock has a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. less than or equal to 22 cSt and a viscosity index of greater than or equal to 140. The ester comprises a reaction product of (a) at least one polyhydric alcohol having at least 2 primary hydroxyl groups, (b) at least one monocarboxylic acid having 2 to 15 carbon atoms and (c) at least one polycarboxylic acid having 2 to 15 carbon atoms, wherein the number of acid groups derived from the polycarboxylic acid(s) is at least 25% of the total number of acid groups derived from the monocarboxylic and polycarboxylic acids.

Lubricant compositions comprising certain mixtures of esters of pentaerythritol, di-pentaerythritol, tri-pentaerythritol and higher pentaerythritol oligomers are ideally suited for use with CO2 as refrigerant in heat transfer devices provided that at least 30% by weight of the esters are esters of pentaerythritol oligomers containing 4 or more pentaerythritol monomer units and wherein a majority of the alkylcarboxylate groups are straight chain C3-6 alkanoyl groups, such as n-pentanoyl. Said mixture of alkylcarboxylate esters are shown to not only have higher than expected viscosity and exceptional CO2 miscibility, but also possess excellent lubricity, film building properties and load bearing properties even as part of a lubricant/CO2 solution.

An improved additive package including at least a polymeric amine antioxidants and a borated extreme pressure/antiwear agent for a polyol ester lubricant suitable for use in high temperature applications is provided. The lubricant fluid includes a base stock that is the reaction product of a polyol and monocarboxylic acid mixture including a major proportion of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (iso-C9 acid). The additive package may be added in up to about 20 percent by weight of the lubricant to provide a viscosity of the lubricant at 40° C. of at least about 140 cSt and at 100° C. of no less than about 15.0 cSt. Greases are formed by adding a thickener to a high viscosity lubricating fluid.
