An overhead projector for use with a flat panel display assembly. The specialized overhead projector provides cooling for the LCD flat panel when used in an overhead projection configuration. The projector contains a rail on which the flat panel display is positioned for alignment and to provide air passage there through for cooling. A clamping mechanism is also described for securing the flat panel display to the projector. The flat panel display is a back-lit flat panel display subsystem for direct viewing as a monitor and also has overhead projection capability. The display subsystem contains a removable door assembly which provides for back-lighting for direct viewing. When the door assembly is removed, the active matrix LCD is semi-transparent and can be placed over the imaging screen of the overhead projector such that the LCD color image can be thus projected. The lamps that provide the back-lighting remain within the display subsystem when the door is removed and a unique optical coupling is provided between the lamps and a light pipe within the door. The display subsystem contains a sensor detecting door presence and simultaneously shuts off the lamps and reverses the display image upon door removal for overhead projection capability.

An optical junction is formed between a permanently housed light source within a display assembly and a removable light pipe when inserted into the display assembly. The optical junction is formed from a reflective film attached along the long axis of the light source and extends past a side of the light source to cover a gap between the light source and the light pipe. Another reflective strip is placed along and extends past an edge of the light pipe to bridge the gap. The reflective material is used to reflect stray light into the light pipe. The present invention also includes a display subsystem with a light pipe in a removable door, the removable door assembly adapted for insertion into and removal from the display assembly and comprising a light pipe for optically coupling with the light source for illuminating the flat panel display matrix with the back-light and wherein the light source remains secured within the display assembly upon removal of the removable door assembly so that a power supply line to the light source is not disturbed upon removal of the removable door assembly and further comprising a control circuit responsive to the sensor for turning the light source on when the control signal is at a first state and for turning the light source off when the control signal is at a second state.

Brightness in the LCD is enhanced by polarization recycling using a pre-polarizing film to pre-polarize light, and a special reflector for recycling light reflected by the pre-polarizing film. In one embodiment, the pre-polarizing film comprises a layer of DBEF brightness enhancement film, and the rear reflector is made of a PTFF material. In another embodiment, the rear reflector is covered with a film comprising barium sulfate. The multiple light sources are selected such that, at any color temperature within a predetermined range, the brightness of the LCD is not reduced below a given threshold minimum (e.g., 70 percent of the maximum brightness). Another constraint for selecting the light sources is that within the predetermined color temperature range, the color temperature is held close to the black body curve of the CIE chromaticity diagram. The light sources are also selected so that their maximum brightness point is set to be near the middle of the predetermined color temperature range.

A method, computer-usable medium, and system for processing graphical data for display on a multi-component display is disclosed. Embodiments improve the display quality of multi-component displays by modifying graphical data to preemptively compensate for distortion caused by interstitial layers and/or display screens of the multi-component display, thereby enabling display of graphical objects from multi-component displays with improved optical characteristics. For example, where components of a multi-component display blur displayed images, graphical data used to display graphical objects may be modified to sharpen the graphical objects before display. The pre-sharpening amplifies the high frequency components of the displayed graphical objects to compensate for the dampening caused by passing the graphical objects through the components of the multi-component display.
