A reconfigurable backlighting construction for use in portable computer-based systems having direct and projection viewing modes of operation is provided. These computer-based systems are capable of selectively displaying color video images on an actively driven display surface, or projecting such video images onto a wall surface or projection screen without the need for a bulky overhead projector, required by all prior art systems. These computer-based systems can be easily reconfigured for projection viewing without physical removal of the light guiding panel and its light diffusing structures. A portable light projection accessory device is also provided for use with the portable computer-based systems of the present invention. The portable light projection device has first and second housing portions that are interconnected by a foldable structure that permits the first and second housing portions to be selectively reconfigured for simple trouble-free use during the projection viewing mode of operation, and for compact storage during the direct viewing mode of operation.

An electro-optical display system for visually displaying a polarized spatially multiplexed image (SMI) of a 3-D object for use in stereoscopic viewing thereof with high image quality and resolution. The electro-optical display system comprises a liquid crystal display device and a micropolarization panel of electrically-passive construction, laminated thereto. The liquid crystal display device visually displays a composite pixel pattern representative of a spatially multiplexed image composed of first and second spatially modulated perspective images of the object. The polarized light passing through first and second optically transparent patterns in the micropolarization panel form a polarized SMI which can be used to stereoscopically view the 3-D object with high image quality and resolution, by viewing the same through an electrically-passive pair of polarizing eyeglasses. The present invention provides a simple, inexpensive and thus practical way to practice the SMI display technique in electro-optical image display systems.

A flat panel display screen apparatus with optical junction and removable backlighting assembly. An optical junction is formed between a permanently housed light source within a display assembly and a removable light pipe when inserted into the display assembly. The optical junction is formed from a reflective film attached along the long axis of the light source and extends past a side of the light source to cover a gap between the light source and the light pipe. Another reflective strip is placed along and extends past an edge of the light pipe to bridge the gap. The reflective material is used to reflect stray light into the light pipe. The present invention also includes a display subsystem with a light pipe in a removable door, the removable door assembly adapted for insertion into and removal from the display assembly and comprising a light pipe for optically coupling with the light source for illuminating the flat panel display matrix with the back-light and wherein the light source remains secured within the display assembly upon removal of the removable door assembly so that a power supply line to the light source is not disturbed upon removal of the removable door assembly and further comprising a control circuit responsive to the sensor for turning the light source on when the control signal is at a first state and for turning the light source off when the control signal is at a second state.

An electro-optical backlighting panel construction for use in portable computer-based systems having direct and projection viewing modes of operation. In the illustrative embodiments of the present invention, the electro-optical backlighting panel is integrated with a LCD display panel, a micropolarization panel, and a touch-screen writing panel to provide several different types of portable computer-based systems including, for example, a portable notebook computer, a computer-driven image display device, and a portable pen-computing device. In general, each of these computer-based systems are capable of selectively displaying color video images on an actively driven display surface, or projecting such video images onto a wall surface or projection screen. These computer-based systems can be easily reconfigured for projection viewing without any sort of physical modification to the LCD display panel assembly. If desired, the these computer-based systems can be used to directly view "spatially-multiplexed" images of 3-D objects or imagery during the direct viewing mode, and when desired these spatially-multiplexed images can be projected onto a wall surface or projection screen during the projection viewing mode. When the spatially-multiplexed images are viewed through electrically-passive polarized glasses, the 3-D object is perceived with stereoscopic depth sensation in either mode of viewing. A portable light projection accessory device is provided for use with the portable computer-based systems of the present invention. Disclosed is a transmissive type display which uses ambient light for enhanced backlighting and which can be used with or without an artificial light source which is either built-in or external to the unit. The backlighting display assembly includes a light pipe with an arrangement of immediately adjacent microprisms serving as the back surface of the light pipe and a light injecting system. The backlighting system may also include a compensating plate or film which also has an immediately adjacent surface profile complementing that of the light pipe. The compensating plate, placed on top of the light pipe, is used to provide uniform illumination. Since outdoor ambient light provided by the sun usually comes from overhead, a light bending film may also be included in the backlighting system so that the display utilizes the overhead light effectively.
