UV stabilized polycarbonates are provided having chemically combined polyhydric phenol benzotriazole carbonate units, such as 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-[4-hydroxy-3-(N-2-benzotriazole)phenyl]ethane carbonate units and methods for making. It is possible to manufacture articles out of thermoplastic materials and to metallize the articles at their surface. In this way one can manufacture reflectors and similar articles. Most thermoplastic materials require extra processing steps prior to the metallization like application of primers, chemical etching and the like.The invention is based on the discovery that a certain type of materials can be metallized without any extra processing steps. The materials involved are polyestercarbonates or blends of polyestercarbonates and polycarbonate. This is quite surprising since polycarbonates can not be metallized in good quality without extra processing steps prior to the metallization step.

An improved method for the preparation of crosslinked polycarbonates comprises the reaction at elevated temperature of a composition containing cyclic polycarbonate oligomers with at least one polyglycidyl acrylate copolymer formed by the reaction of at least one olefinic compound with a glycidyl acrylate monomer. Further disclosed are network polycarbonates wherein the carbonate chains are linked to each other via polyglycidyl acrylate copolymer groups, and prepreg compositions which comprise a filler and a mixture of cyclic polycarbonate oligomers with a polyglycidyl acrylate copolymer.

A process for preparing a polyestercarbonate copolymer which is nearly devoid of diaryl-carbonates and that exhibits a glass transition temperature lower than bisphenol-A carbonate homopolymer, and that shows improved processability is herein described. The desired lower Tg and improved flow can be achieved by the polycondensation of a dihydric phenol and aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. The condensate is polymerized with a carbonate forming reagent.
