A closed-loop, tubular lamp envelope and methods of manufacturing closed-loop, tubular lamp envelopes are disclosed. A dome is formed at one end of a light-transmissive tube. A blister is molded on the dome, and a hole is formed in the molded blister. Next, a dome is formed at the other end of the light-transmissive tube. A blister is formed on the dome, and a second hole is formed in the molded blister. Each of the molded blisters includes a rim which defines the respective hole. A second tube is processed in the same way. The respective rims at the ends of the first and second tubes are fused together to form a sealed, closed-loop lamp envelope. Each tube may be bent to provide a desired shape of the lamp envelope. The molding of the rims insures that the sealing surfaces match.

The quartz arc tube has a cylindrical design which promotes a nearly symmetric longitudinal surface temperature profile during operation. The profile has a maximum temperature of about 900° C. which allows for longer operating life at high average wall loadings.

Method for introducing a limited amount of mercury into a fluorescent lamp during manufacture thereof includes the steps of forming the lamp with an exhaust tubulation therein open at an end thereof, exhausting the interior of the lamp through the exhaust tubulation, placing a body of metal material not reactive with mercury in the exhaust tubulation open end, the body having a coating of metal which amalgams with mercury, over a selected surface area of the body, and having mercury on the coated area of the body, such that a limited amount of the mercury is retained by the metal coating, and sealing the open end of the exhaust tubulation, whereby the amount of mercury retained on the body and introduced into the lamp is limited by the surface area of the metal coating on the body.

The method includes applying heat to the surfaces to be joined to cause a localized melting of the binder. The surfaces are then brought together and joined by alternately applying compression and stretching.
