Abstract:
The novel transparent polyolefin, polyester or polyamide article disclosed is stabilized against the effects of light, oxygen, heat and aggressive chemicals by addition of 0.005-0.30% by weight the polymeric substrate of a hydroxyphenyl triazine UV absorber, and is characterized by its thickness between 1 and 500 μm. Preferred polyolefin articles thus stabilized are agricultural films containing as further stabilizer a sterically hindered amine. The novel compositions act as selective UV filter especially useful in agriculture.

A description is given of processes for the preparation of mono- and bisacylphosphines and of mono- and bisacylphosphine oxides and mono- and bisacylphosphine sulfides, which comprises first reacting organic P-monohalogenophosphines or P,P-dihalogenophosphines, or mixtures thereof, with an alkali metal or magnesium in combination with lithium, where appropriate in the presence of a catalyst, and then carrying out the reaction with add halides and, in the case of the process for the preparation of oxides, carrying out an oxidation step and, in the case of the preparation of sulfides, reacting the phosphines so obtained with sulfur. It is characteristic, inter alia, that the processes are carried out without isolation of the intermediates.

The present invention relates to highly compatible hydroxyphenyltriazine UV-absorbers and to their use in protecting plants in green houses and the protection of foodstuffs, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, shampoos and the like from the deleterious effects of ultraviolet radiation. It has been found that certain highly compatible tris-aryl-s-triazines are especially effective towards this end when incorporated in the containers or films in which such materials are stored.

Compounds of the general formula I′ in which R1 is H, C1-C12alkyl; C5-C12cycloalkyl; C2-C18alkyl which is interrupted by one or more O; SR4; OR5; or is a group of formula II or III R2, R21 and R3 independently of one another, are H or —Y-T as defined in claim 1, where T is a reactive group selected from OH, acryl- and methacryloxy and arylcarbonate groups, and further symbols are as defined in claim 1, are effective as crosslinking agents for polymeric networks, especially as in flexographic printing plates, coatings, and plastic containers or films. Further provided is a method of protecting the content of a clear or lightly colored plastic container or film against the deleterious effects of ultraviolet radiation, which method comprises permanently and covalently bonding one or more UV absorbing moieties of a durable s-triazine UV absorber via condensation to a suitable polymer component.

Liquid substituted 2H-benzotriazole mixtures are prepared by alkylation with concomitant dealkylation, fragmentation and realkylation of 2-(2-hydroxy-5-alkylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazoles or of 2-(2-hydroxy-3,5-dialkylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazoles with straight or branched alkenes of 8 to 30 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid catalyst at 100.degree.-200.degree. C. The liquid mixtures exhibit outstanding efficacy in protecting organic substrates from light induced deterioration as well as good resistance to loss by volatilization or exudation during the processing of stabilized compositions at elevated temperatures.

A stabilizer composition comprising (A) a compound of the formula (I) wherein R is (CH2—CH2—O—)n, —R2; —CH2—CH(OH)—CH2—O—R2; or —CH(R3)—CO—O—R4; n is 0 or 1; R2 is C1-C13alkyl or C2C20alkenyl or C6-C12aryl or CO—C1-C18alkyl; R3 is H or C1-C8 alkyl; R4 is C1-C12alkyl or C2-C12alkenyl or C5C6cycloalkyl; and (B) one or more compounds selected from benzotriazoles of the formula (IIa), 2-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula (IIb), oxalanilides of the formula (IIc), 2-hydroxyphenyltriazines of formula (IId), cinnamates of formula (IIe), and benzoates of formula (IIf) as defined in claim 1, is especially effective towards stabilizing organic materials against degradation induced by light, heat or oxidation.
