Abstract:
A modulatable power transmission clutch including interleaved clutch plates and having a central power transmitting shaft extending axially through the clutch. The clutch includes a fluid operated movable piston for effecting clutch operation by compression of the plates. The piston has a smaller piston area and a larger piston area, the smaller piston area has fluid flow directed to it a variable fluid pressure whereby the clutch is modulatable. The larger piston area is adapted to have fluid flow directed thereto to effect maximum and unmodulatable engagement of the clutch. A spring loaded normally closed trigger valve controls fluid flow to the larger piston area in response to fluid pressure above a predetermined amount at the smaller piston area. The trigger valve is mounted in the shaft and is normally closed so that pressure fluid is directed to the smaller piston area at a variable fluid pressure whereby the clutch is modulatable. When the valve is open by said fluid pressure over a predetermined amount, the valve permits fluid flow to the larger piston area to effect maximum and unmodulatable engagement of the clutch for full clutch capacity.
Abstract:
A marine vessel propulsion system includes port and starboard drive systems, each including an engine, an engine throttle, and a transmission furnishing drive power to a propeller on a drive shaft. Each transmission includes forward and reverse clutches, and each clutch can be fully engaged, fully disengaged and modulated. Two alternately usable separate control stations operate the throttles and clutches to control vessel speed and direction. Each control station comprises port and starboard sets of manually operable control devices, and each set includes a mode selector switch for selecting cruise mode or troll mode for its respective throttle and a manually operable direction/speed control lever. In troll mode the lever selects and modulates the selected respective clutch to control propeller speed. In cruise mode the lever fully engages the selected respective clutch and also regulates the engine throttle to control propeller speed. Port and starboard manually operable power-link function selector switches at each control station enable one direction/speed control lever to control both drive systems simultaneously in the forward cruise mode. Electronic controllers process control station output signals and feedback signals indicative of engine speeds and propeller direction and speeds and then provide drive system control signals. Transfer of control to one station from another is possible.

A boat trailer modified to include a dolly and dolly track, the dolly including a hook triggering mechanism, a bow cradle and a slidable hooking mechanism for engaging a watercraft bow ring at a wide range misalignment with the centerline of the trailer. The trailer further including a remote controlled power winch with an automatic shut off for stopping the power winch when a watercraft is fully loaded. The invention providing a means for a single user to launch a securely retrieve a watercraft to and from a watercraft trailer.
Abstract:
A modulatable power transmission clutch has a rotatable driving member, a rotatable driven member, and slippingly engagable clutch plates between said members which are movable into engagement by a fluid-applied spring-released movable piston having two separate fluid application areas thereon, with one area being larger than the other. Fluid is supplied directly to the smaller piston area by an operator-controlled proportional solenoid valve to regulate clutch modulation. Fluid flow to the larger piston area is controlled by a spring-biased trigger valve which pops open when fluid pressure to the smaller piston area reaches a predetermined level, to thereby effect maximum clutch engagement. The trigger valve operates a dump valve which opens to relieve fluid pressure on the larger piston area when the trigger valve recloses in response to reduction of fluid pressure from the solenoid valve.
Abstract:
An off-highway heavy duty dump truck includes an engine, a torque converter, a shiftable multi-speed hydraulically operated power transmission for driving the truck wheels, and a control system for the transmission. The transmission includes internal clutches which are selectively operated by a solenoid-operated rotary speed range selector valve to effect shifting in neutral, reverse or several forward speed ranges. The control system includes a manually operable multi-position speed range selector switch, sensing devices for ascertaining transmission input and output speeds, a limit switch and rotary switch responsive to the condition and rotary position, respectively, of the rotary range selector valve, and other condition responsive switches. The control system further includes an electronic controller having logic circuits therein for receiving input signal information from the aforesaid switches and sensing devices and for providing output signals to operate the rotary range selector valve and effect automatic shifting of the transmission to a selected speed range, provided predetermined conditions are met. The electronic controller provides operational safeguards until such conditions are met, responds appropriately to system failures, and displays of relevant system information.
Abstract:
A marine vessel propulsion system includes one or more drive systems, each including an engine, an engine throttle, and a shiftable transmission. A control system for each drive system comprises a manually operable control lever assembly for electrically operating a servo assembly which mechanically operates the engine throttle and the transmission shifting clutches. The control lever assembly comprises a one-piece plastic support base which is adapted to pivotally support one or two identical one-piece plastic control levers. Components associated with a control lever are interchangeable and identical and include a potentiometer mechanically interconnected between the control lever and the base, a detent plate and a detent arm. The control lever assembly also comprises based-mounted components including a station selector switch, a mode selector switch, an electrical connector and a flexible circuit board for electrically connecting the potentiometer selector switches and electrical connector. The servo assembly comprises a plastic housing containing two identical servo units for mechanically operating the engine throttle and the transmission shifting clutches. Each servo unit comprises a support frame on which are mounted a reversible electric motor having a rotatable motor shaft, a rotatable link-drive shaft and a solenoid-operated clutch for connecting and disconnecting the motor shaft and the link-drive shaft. A potentiometer mechanically connected to the link-drive shaft is restrained from rotation by a clamp engaged with the motor housing.
Abstract:
A power transmission system for swinging the upper section of a mobile crane in opposite directions comprises a prime mover, a torque converter, a modulatable torque converter clutch connected between the prime mover and the torque converter, and a transmission connected to be driven by the torque converter and including a pair of alternately actuatable modulatable transmission clutches therein. The torque converter clutch is modulatable between disengaged and engaged positions. Each transmission clutch is modulatable between a minimum engaged position and a fully engaged position. Selectively operable control means are provided for modulating the torque converter clutch and a selected one of the transmission clutches to swing the crane upper in a desired direction. The control means effect full engagement of the selected transmission clutch prior to full engagement of the torque converter clutch. The control means further include means for sensing torque converter output speed (transmission input speed) and for governing modulation of the torque converter clutch accordingly.
