Abstract: A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine includes an injector body in which there are positioned an actuator, a control valve, and a needle guide. The actuator actuates the control valve, the control valve controlling an injection needle sliding the needle guide between an open position in which injection is permitted and a closed position in which the injection of fuel is prevented. The injector additionally includes a first electrical connection extending from the needle guide to a metal that are internal to the injector, and a metal extension extending from the metal ring to a connector pin accessible from the outside of the injector, so that an electrical signal indicative of the position of the needle can be transmitted from the needle guide for the needle to the connector pin.

Abstract: A method of determining the cetane number of a fuel in an internal combustion engine comprising, during running of the engine, i) with respect to one cylinder, performing a routine including a series of injections such that for each injection a quantity of fuel is injected into the cylinder, and during the routine varying the angle at which the injections takes place with respect to crankshaft angle; ii) measuring engine speed at intervals during the series of injections and determining values for changes in engine speed consequent to the injections; iii) determining cetane number from a pre-stored relationship relating the cetane number to changes in engine speed consequent to changes in the test injection angle.

Abstract: A fuel injector includes fixed metal components, in particular an injector body, a solenoid actuator equipped with a retaining spring that holds a control valve stem, a control valve body including a seat for the control valve stem, a spacer between the body of the control valve and an injection nozzle, a control chamber, and an injection needle seat. The fuel injector also includes movable metal components, in particular the control valve stem and an armature thereof and an injection needle. Surfaces of the metal components that are in contact with one another are contact surfaces. Resistive surface coatings are arranged on a number of the contact surfaces. The overall electrical resistivity of the injector between the body of the solenoid actuator and the body of the injector varies by at least three distinct ohm values intermittently according to the kinetics of the injection needle of the injector.
