摘要:
A method of controlling a current defrost cycle for an outdoor coil of a heat pump system, the heat pump system having a plurality of supplemental heating elements for heating an air stream passing from an indoor coil to an air supply duct during defrost operation, wherein an initial quantity of supplemental heating elements energized is a function of a most recent previous defrost cycle. The initial quantity of supplemental heating elements is energized upon initiation of a defrost cycle. Whether the initial quantity of supplemental heating elements provided is insufficient or excessive is determined. At least one of the supplemental heating elements is deactivated if the initial quantity of supplemental heating elements being provided is excessive. At least one of the supplemental heating elements is activated if the initial quantity of supplemental heating elements being provided is if the initial quantity of supplemental heating elements being provided is insufficient, and at least one additional supplemental heating element is available. Information as to an initial quantity of supplemental heating elements to be activated for a following defrost cycle is retained. The initial quantity of supplemental heating elements to be activated for a following defrost cycle is equal to a number of supplemental heating elements activated upon termination of the current defrost cycle. The heat pump is kept on to complete the defrost cycle during an overshoot condition.

A method is described of selectively varying the speed of the indoor blower of a heat pump for heating a building or other indoor area when ambient temperature drops below a predetermined level, in order to reduce the cold blow effect of air entering the building. The operating run time fraction of a heating cycle is determined, and the speed of the indoor blower is adjusted when the run time fraction crosses a predetermined threshold value, except that the speed of the indoor blower is maintained when the run time fraction is sufficiently changed compared with a previous run time fraction.

In a heat pump system designed for use with a relatively low pressure refrigerant, provision is made, by use of a vapor pressure control system, to use a higher pressure refrigerant without replacement of the indoor coil and the line set. The vapor pressure is sensed during periods of heat pump operation, and when the pressure reaches a predetermined maximum threshold level, the outdoor fan speed is reduced to thereby cause the vapor pressure to be reduced. When the vapor pressure is reduced to a predetermined minimum threshold level, then the fan speed is resumed so as thereby allow the vapor pressure to again be increased.

A suction accumulator for use in a heat pump or air conditioning system includes an inlet tube that has a plurality of holes therein. One hole is preferably at the end of the inlet tube while the others are preferably of decreasing size and spaced apart from near the bottom of the accumulator upward along the inlet tube. Such an arrangement ensures that a vapor/liquid mixture of refrigerant and lubricant entering the accumulator does not cause excessive foaming during normal operation while quickly destratifying a stratified mixture that frequently occurs during periods of system inactivity or floodback.

A control box kit for twinning fan coils in a heat pump or AC installation includes electro-mechanical isolation relays and auxiliary limit switches. Existing fan coil transformers are disconnected to avoid component failure due to high voltage wiring variations. A single transformer is connected to operate both systems. Isolation relays for the reversing valves and supplemental electric heaters in a heat pump system allow both heat pumps to have independent defrost cycles. The accessory transformer and isolation relays are packaged and pre-wired in a control box for easy connection in the field.

An improved method and apparatus for limiting the pressure in the high pressure side of a heat pump system to a safe value, without causing the defrost control circuitry thereof to initiate unnecessary defrost cycles. When the heat pump system is operating in its heating mode, pressure limiting circuitry limits the pressure in the high side thereof to a safe value by turning the outdoor fan off, and holding it off, when the vapor pressure in the vapor containing parts of the system is equal to or greater than a preset threshold pressure. When ambient conditions are such that frost is able to form on the outdoor coil, the activity of the pressure limiting circuitry is used to reset the defrost delay time or otherwise inhibit the operation of the defrost control circuitry.

A method for controlling a system includes receiving system demand data; processing the system demand data; defining a first value of a first system operating parameter; receiving system condition data; associating the first value of the first system operating parameter with a first operating map function; determining whether the system condition data exceeds a threshold of the first operating map function; determining whether the system condition data exceeds a threshold of a second operating map function responsive to determining that the system condition data exceeds the threshold of the first operating map function; and changing the first value of the first system operating parameter to a second value associated with the second operating map function responsive to determining that the system condition data does not exceed the threshold of the second operating map function.

A method and apparatus are provided for indicating the status of the refrigerant charge in an air conditioning system based upon the degree of subcooling present in the condensed refrigerant system temperature measurements. The status of the refrigerant charge in the system is indicated in real-time on a service panel for access by a field service technician. The status of the refrigerant charge in the system on a time-average basis for a specified period of operation is presented on an indicator panel. The indicator panel includes a first indicator light indicating that the refrigerant charge is low, a second indicator light indicating that the refrigerant charge is high, and a third indicator light indicating that the refrigerant charge is correct.

An electronic apparatus externally detects open protector contacts inside of a compressor. The compressor includes a compressor motor having a run winding and a start winding. The compressor motor also includes internal protector contacts that open the electrical circuit to the “C” terminal in a protection condition. A compressor running indicator circuit is electrically connected between the “S” and the “R” terminals to indicate a compressor running condition. Also, a protection indicator circuit is electrically connected between the “C” and the “S” terminals to indicate a voltage present across the “C” and the “S” terminals. The protection indicator circuit is also coupled to the compressor running indicator circuit such that the protection indicator circuit is disabled when the compressor is running normally and the protection indicator is enabled and indicates when protector contacts open inside of the compressor.

A method for determining a level of refrigerant charge in a vapor compression system having a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device and an evaporator operatively connected in serial relationship in a refrigerant flow circuit having a refrigerant, includes receiving information indicative of at least one of a compressor torque or compressor current; and determining whether the refrigerant charge is within a defined tolerance or whether the refrigerant is to be added or recovered in response to the receiving of the information.
