摘要:
A device for splicing multiple optical fibers includes a novel splice element having two plates formed from a sheet of malleable material, there being a fold line in the sheet forming a hinge, the two plates being folded toward one another to define opposing surfaces. One of the opposing surfaces has several fiber receiving grooves therein, parallel with the fold line, and the other surface has ramps at each end to support the fibers proximate the transition from their buffered portions to their stripped portions. The ramps are adjacent porches which are integrally formed with one of the plates, the porches having additional grooves for aligning the fibers with the fiber receiving grooves. Stop pads are provided on both opposing surfaces, at the corners of the plates, to insure a clearance space at the ends of the plates which provides for more gradual clamping of the fibers, reducing insertion loss.

An optical fiber splice comprising a hinged splice element having two legs, at least oen of the legs having a groove therein for h olding the fibers to be spliced, a base for receiving the splice element, and a cap fitting over the base which has camming bars extending into the base and around the splice element, the camming bars urging the legs into a closed, clamping state. The camming bars are shorter than the splice element, applying the clamping force only to the center thereof, which allows the legs to flex open at their ends and apply a gradual clamping to the fibers. Alternatively, the camping bars may be thicker at their center and have inwardly facing surfaces which are convex, providing gradual clamping of the fibers which minimizes insertion losses due to microbending. The cap is provided with tabs which hold the cap in open and closed positions, the open positon allowing insertion of the fibers into the splice elements, and the closed position causing the convex surfaces of the camming bars to forcibly contact the legs of the element and thereby clamp the fibers.

An optical fiber splice comprising a hinged splice element having two legs, at least one of the legs having a groove therein for holding the fibers to be spliced, and an index matching gel disposed between the legs. In the embodiment wherein the legs remain divergent or slightly open in the clamping state, a vent hole is punched in the center of the splice element to minimize migration of the gel between the inner and outer surfaces of the elements near the fiber interface, which could otherwise increaase insertion loss due to the migration of microbubbles, particularly during temperature cycling. A vent channel may optionally be formed in the splice element to provide fluid communication between the groove and the vent hole. In the embodiment wherein the legs are essentially parallel and in intimate contact in the clamping state, rails may be provided in one leg opposite leg with the groove whereby the rails impinge on either side of the groove and block the flow of the index matching gel.

An optical fiber splice element comprising a sheet of ductile material having a novel focus hinge defining first and second legs, each of the legs having a V-groove therein for receiving the optical fibers. The focus hinge, comprising a groove on one side of the sheet, a notch on the other side of the sheet aligned with the groove, and a convex hinge web, provides precise registration of the V-grooves when the sheet is folded; this in turn leads to improved alignment of the fibers. The V-grooves also have a novel angular geometry which optimizes the clamping forces, resulting in lower insertion loss. The interior angle of the V-grooves is smaller than the optimum angle whereby, when the fiber is clamped and portions of the V-groove surfaces are deformed, the V-groove has an effective angle which is approximately equal to the optimum angle.

An LC format optical connector for terminating an optical fiber includes a housing configured to mate with an LC receptacle. A backbone is configured to engage an outer surface of the outer shell of the housing and includes a mounting structure that is configured to engage a boot. A collar body is retained between the outer shell and the backbone and includes a fiber stub disposed in a first portion of the collar body, the fiber stub being mounted in a ferrule. A mechanical splice is disposed in a second portion of the collar body, the mechanical splice configured to splice the fiber stub to the optical fiber. The backbone also includes a fiber jacket clamping portion to clamp a jacket portion that surrounds a portion of the optical fiber upon actuation.

An optical fiber connector for terminating an optical fiber is provided. The optical fiber connector includes a housing configured to mate with a receptacle. The connector also includes a collar body disposed in the housing and retained between the housing's outer shell and a backbone. The collar body includes a swivel head coupled to a front end portion of the collar body, where the swivel head is configured to receive a ferrule. The swivel head is configured to pivot with respect to the front end portion of the collar body by a controlled amount upon a side pull force being placed on the connector and/or optical fiber.

An optical fiber connector includes a housing configured to mate with a receptacle, a collar body that includes a fiber stub and a mechanical splice device, a backbone to retain the collar body within the housing, and a boot. The backbone includes a cable jacket clamping portion to clamp a cable jacket that surrounds a portion of the terminated optical fiber upon actuation. The boot actuates the cable jacket clamping portion of the backbone upon attachment to the backbone. A method for terminating the optical fiber in the field includes slitting or removing a portion of the cable jacket prior to splicing the optical fiber to the fiber stub. The method also includes utilizing a protective sheath or tube to protect exposed portion of the fiber cable and provide structural integrity to the optical connector.
