摘要: The call hold state notification system functions to provide an indication to the parties presently served by the existing call connection that the original hold state has been terminated. This is accomplished by enabling both parties (multiple parties on a n-way call) to a call connection to place their respective call termination on hold to serve another call or to perform some other task without having to physically monitor the call connection. When any party to the call connection removes the hold state at their respective telephone station set, the remaining parties to the call connection who have a hold state active at their termination receive a notification of the reconnection of the party to the call connection. Optionally, the returning party also receives a notification that the call connection is in an on hold state at the other end of the call connection and that party is being advised of the termination of the held state by the returning party.

摘要: The system for transmitting a change in call queued/hold state across a communications network (termed “call state notification system” herein) functions to provide an indication to the parties on the existing call connection that the calling party has placed the call on hold and/or the call center has advanced the call connection to the head of the queue for connection to an agent. This is accomplished by enabling the calling party to place their call termination on hold to serve another call or to perform some other task without having to physically monitor the call connection. When the calling party removes the hold state at their terminal device, the call center receives a notification of the reconnection of the calling party to the call connection. In addition, when the call center advances the call connection to the head of the queue, the call state notification system notifies the calling party and, if the call connection is on hold, the call center maintains the calling party's position at the head of the queue until the calling party returns to the call connection.

摘要: Apparatus for switching full rate (e.g., 64 kilobit per second) signals and composite signals comprising a plurality of subrate signals (e.g., 32 kilobit per second subrate signal). The apparatus includes a unit for compressing selected ones of a plurality of full-rate signals into a smaller plurality of full-rate single and composite signals, and apparatus for decompressing composite signals into a plurality of full-rate signals. The main elements of the switching fabric of the switch continue to switch full-rate signals. Advantageously, during periods of heavy load, the switching network fabric of a switching system can carry more calls, and more traffic can be carried between switches equipped for subrate switching.

摘要: The present system for the secure execution of credit based point of sale purchases uses a credit card that is devoid of any human readable customer account information on the face of the credit card and that encodes all the relevant account information on read only media built into the credit card. This encoded information can be encrypted or protected is some manner to prevent its retrieval by an unauthorized user. In addition, the present system makes use of a point of sale terminal to execute the transaction. In the transaction, the point of sale terminal scans the credit card to obtain the account information encoded therein and the user then inputs a personal identification number PIN to proceed to the next step of the charge process. The PIN number can be used as the cryptokey if the account information is encrypted on the card, or may simply represent a first level of user authentication. In either case, the account information and user authentication information is transmitted to a remotely located credit authorizing agency via telephone lines. Neither the credit card account number nor the type of card (VISA, MASTERCARD), nor the PIN number is displayed to the clerk on the point of sale terminal. If the credit card number and PIN number transmitted to the remotely located credit authorizing agency match the customer data stored at the remotely located credit authorizing agency, the point of sale terminal displays a copy of the user's signature (or photograph) for comparison by the clerk with the user's written authorization of the purchase (and/or physical appearance).

摘要: A clip is provided that can be used for ligating tissue, such as vessels, other tubular ducts, and the like. The clip has opposed first and second leg members having proximal and distal ends. The proximal end of each leg member is connected by an apex having a notch formed therein. Moreover, each leg member has an inner tissue-contacting surface and an outer compression-receiving surface, both of which include features to provide a more secure ligation of the vessel or duct. A method for ligating vessels is also provided.

摘要: The present invention provides a method and system for sending a server-specified message from an application server to Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) without setting up a call path between the application server and the CPE. The application server is coupled with a switch, which is in turn coupled with the CPE. The application server sends a request to the switch. The switch sends, based upon the request, a predetermined server-specified message to the CPE without setting up a call path between the application server and the CPE. The CPE is not rung and the predetermined message is not affected by the features of the line associated with the CPE.

摘要: Apparatus and a method for providing, to a service provider, telemetry access to customer equipment. The telemetry access is provided using wireless access means to avoid having to provide special residential wiring to connect to meters and control devices at customer premises. Each customer device is provided with a cellular station having its own mobile identity, either an international mobile switching identifier (IMSI) or a mobile identity number (MIN). Each IMSI or MIN need not be associated with a different telephone number. For example, a single telephone number can be assigned to a service provider to access all devices telemetered by that service provided. Advantageously, this arrangement provides for an inexpensive method and apparatus for accessing customer devices.
