AN OIL-SOLUBLE TERPOLYMER, USEFUL AS A VISCOSITY INDEX IMPROVER AND POUR POINT DEPRESSANT FOR LUBRICATING OILS, IS MADE BY A ZIEGLER-NATTA SYNTHESIS, PREFERABLY HYDROGEN MODERATED, FROM MONOMERS COMPRISING 2 TO 50 MOLE PERCENT OF A VINYL AROMATIC HYDROCARBON; FROM 2 TO 49 MOLE PERCENT OF A C2-C8 STRAIGHT-CHAIN A-OLEFIN; AND 10 TO 97 MOLE PERCENT OF A SUBSTANTIALLY LINEAR C12-C20 A-OLEFIN HAVING NOT LESS THAN 9 UNSUBSTITUTED METHYLENE RADICALS IN A STRAIGHT CHAIN FOLLOWING THE OLEFINIC CARBN ATOMS. THE TERPOLYMR IS AMORPHOUS IN STRUCTURE AS DETERMINED BY X-RAY AND DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSES, IS ESSENTIALLY FREE OF OLEFINIC UNSATURATION AND HAS A NUMBER AVERAGE MOLECULAR WEIGHT EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN 10,000.
Abstract:
Hydrocarbon polymers comprising linear C18 alkyl side chains are added to residual fuels to improve their pour point and flow characteristics. These polymers are prepared by polymerizing C20C40 alpha-olefins in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst to a number average molecular weight within the range between about 500 and 125,000. Particularly effective polymers are prepared from C3-C18 alpha-olefins and C20-C40 alpha-olefins.

Ziegler-type polymers comprising C14-C24 alpha-monoolefins and having a number average molecular weight within the range between about 1,000 and about 200,000 are effective dewaxing aids for improving the efficiency of the separation of wax from hydrocarbon oils. Preferred dewaxing aids include mixtures of two or more homopolymers of C14-C24 alpha-monoolefins and copolymers of two or more alpha-monoolefins containing from 14 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule. The Ziegler-type polymers when combined with Friedel-Crafts condensation products of chlorinated wax and naphthalene synergistically improve the separation of wax from petroleum oils.

DISTILLATE PETROLEUM HYDROCARBON FUEL COMPOSITIONS SUCH AS GASOLINES, JET FUELS OR DIESEL FUELS ARE COMPOUNDED TO CNTAIN SMALL AMOUNTS OF AT LEAST ONE AMIDE FORMED BY CONDENSING A BASIC SIX-MEMBERED HETEROCYCLIC ORGANIC COMPOUND CONTAINING ONLY CARBON ATOMS AND NOT MORE THAN TWO NITROGEN ATOMS IN THE RING AND WHEREIN THE COMPOUND CONTAINS AT LEAST ONE NITROGEN ATOM CONTAINING AT LEAST ONE HYDROGEN ATOM ATTACHED THERETO, WITH AN ACIDIC COMPOUND WHICH MAY BE AN ALIPHATIC MONO OR DICARBOXYLIC ACID, ITS ANHYDRIDE OR THE CORRESPONDING ACID HALIDES OR DERIVATIVES THEREOF CONTAINING FROM 6 TO 20 CARBON ATOMS PER MOLECULE. BETWEEN ABOUT 5 AND 150 POUNDS OF ADDITIVE IS USED PER 1000 BARRELS OF DISTILLATE FUEL. GENERALLY BETWEEN ABOUT 0.001 AND ABOUT 1 WT. PERCENT OF THE ADMIXTURE IS USED. SUCH ADDITIVES IMPART CLEANLINESS, RUST INHIBITING AND DETERGENCY PROPERTIES TO THE FUELS.
