    摘要: An active control mechanism and method for stabilizing a servo-controlled actuator system such as an actuator system in a data recording disk drive by compensating the vibrational modes of the actuator's arm assembly. The control mechanism has a sensing arrangement which can include one or more individual sensors attached to the actuator at locations where they generate signals in phase with the vibrational modes, and especially with all the major vibrational modes, of the arm assembly. A control mechanism derives from the signals an adjustment signal consisting of three corrective terms--a stiffening correction, an active damping correction and an inertia reduction correction--and the adjustment signal is used in the feedback control loop to stabilize the actuator system.

    摘要: An actuator assembly having two coils disposed between the poles of a voice coil motor (VCM) magnet for improved dynamic performance during settling and tracking operations in a disk drive. The two coils in the VCM are connected to separate current sources to allow the current flow in the two coils to have the same sense (clockwise or counterclockwise) or the opposite sense with respect to each other. When the current flows in the two coils have the opposite sense, excitation of the principal in-plane bending mode resonance of the actuator assembly is suppressed allowing the use of an increased servo bandwidth for settling and tracking operations of the disk drive. During seek operations of the disk drive, where maximum torque on the actuator is desirable, the coil currents in the two coils are chosen to have the same sense so that the forces on the actuator from the two coils are additive.

    摘要: A system and method for using a piezoelectric (PZT) element to simultaneously actuate and sense a displacement of an arm assembly; e.g., an assembly for reading and writing data in a storage medium. The simultaneous actuating and sensing function of the PZT is achieved by adding a high-frequency excitation to a control signal which actuates the PZT. The control signal and the high-frequency excitation cause deformation of the PZT translating into arm displacement and cause the generation of an electrical response signal by the PZT. A bridge which simulates the reactance/resistance of the PZT receives the response signal and derives from it the displacement of the arm assembly. Suitable compensation techniques for active control of the PZT and for mitigation of mechanical vibrations and other disturbances experienced by the arm assembly may then be implemented based on the displacement.

    摘要: A magnetic recording disk drive has three vibration sensors mounted to the disk drive base to provide feedforward vibration compensation signals. First and second spaced-apart sensors are aligned generally parallel to a radius from the disk rotational axis to a head position on the disk between the inside diameter position (hID) and outside diameter position (hOD) for detecting rotational vibration about the disk rotational axis and linear vibration in the cross-track direction. A third vibration sensor is aligned generally orthogonal to the primary axes of the first and second vibration sensors for detecting primarily linear vibrations in the along-the-track or track circumferential direction. The disk drive servo control processor calculates, from the signals from the three sensors, a rotational vibration feedforward signal, a radial linear vibration feedforward signal, and a circumferential linear vibration feedforward signal which are summed with the actuator control signal to compensate for the vibrations.

    摘要: A thermally-assisted recording (TAR) disk drive uses “shingled” recording and a rectangular waveguide as a “wide-area” heat source. The waveguide generates a generally elliptically-shaped optical spot that heats an area of the recording layer extending across multiple data tracks. The waveguide core has an aspect ratio (cross-track width to along-the track thickness) that achieves the desired size of the heated area while locating the peak optical intensity close to the trailing edge of the write pole tip where writing occurs. The large cross-track width of the waveguide core increases the volume of recording layer heated by the optical spot, which reduces the rate of cooling. This moves the peak temperature point of the heated area closer to the write pole tip and reduces the temperature drop between the peak temperature and the temperature at the trailing edge of the write pole tip where writing occurs.

    摘要: Approaches for a hard-disk drive (HDD) baseplate comprising a recessed region that provides additional clearance for a disk. The protective enclosure of the HDD comprises a baseplate. The surface of the baseplate, which opposes a magnetic-recording disk, comprises a recessed region near the outer diameter (OD) of the magnetic-recording disk. The recessed region prevents the disk from being damaged through inadvertent physical contact with the baseplate, which may arise when the HDD receives a mechanical shock. The recessed region may be designed to minimize the damage to the disk if physical contact between the disk and the baseplate does occur. The recessed region may have a variety of shapes, such as a circular indentation or one or more non-contiguous regions in the baseplate where physical contact between the disk and the baseplate is deemed likely to occur.

A first piezoelectric device is coupled with a first portion of the spring assembly and a second piezoelectric device coupled with a second portion of the spring assembly.
