Abstract:
A method is provided for making a curable polymeric reaction product of an organic diamine and an aliphatically unsaturated dicarbonyl compound such as an organic anhydride or organic dicarboxylic acid. The curable polymeric reaction product can be heat softened to allow incorporation of filler and is convertible to the infusible state by heat or by the employment of a free radical initiator. Reaction of the organic diamine and the aliphatically unsaturated dicarbonyl compound is effected in a phenolic-liquid hydrocarbon solvent medium. The hydrocarbon can serve as an azeotroping agent to effect removal of water of reaction prior to the recovery of the reaction product of the organic diamine and the aliphatically unsaturated dicarbonyl compound. The polymeric reaction product can be molded to produce high temperature resistant polyimide films and structures.

BIS(AMINOORGANOSILYL)HYDROCARBONS, SUCH AS 1,4-BIS(AMINOBUTYLDIMETHYLSILYL)BENZENE ARE MADE BY HYDROGENATING THE CORRESPONDING BIS(CYANOORGANOSILYL)HYDROCBONS. THE BIS(CYANOORGANOISLYL)HYDROCARBONS CAN BE MADE BY THE PLATINUM CATALYZED ADDITION OF AN ALIPHATICALLY UNSATURATED NITRILE SUCH AS ALLYL CYANIDE TO A BIS (ORGANOSILY)HYDROCARBON SUCH AS BIS(DIMETHYLSILYL)BENZENE. THE BIS(AMINOORGANOSILYL)HYDROCARBONS ARE USEFUL AS SILANOL CURING AGENTS, AND AS INTERMEDIATES FOR MAKING POLYIMIDES; THE BIS(CYANOORGANOSILYL)HYDROCARBONS CAN BE EMPLOYED AS ANTISTATS FOR SYNTHETIC FIBERS, ADDITIVES FOR CHANNEL SEALANT GREASES TO IMPART IMPROVED SOLVENT CHARACTERISTICS THERETO, ETC.

ESTERS OR AMIDES OF TRIMELLITC ANHYDRIDE CAN BE PREPARED BY REACTING THE LATTER DIRECTLY WITH EITHER A POLYOL OR A DISECONDARY AMINE AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES AND BY A REARRANGEMENT REACTION INVOLVING THE ELIMINATION OF WATER TO OBTAIN THE ESTER OR AMIDE POLYANHYDRIDE. POLYAMIDE ACID RESINS AND POLYIMIDES CAN BE PREPARED FROM SUCH COMPOSITIONS.

AROMATIC DIANHYDRIDES AND DIAMINES ARE REACTED IN A SOLVENT COMPRISING AT LEAST 40%, BY WEIGHT OF AN ALIPHATIC POLYOL TO PRODUCE POLYAMIDE ACID SOSLUTIONS WHICH CAN BE HEAT-CURED TO POLYIMIDE RESINS. THESE POLYAMIDE ACID SOLUTIONS CAN BE CONVERTED TO POLYIMIDES AND EMPLOYED AS INSULATION OVER CONDUCTION CORES, AS LAMINATING VARNISHES, AS DIPPING VARNISHES TO IMPREGNATE COILS OF PREVIOUSLYINSULATED WIRE IN THE MOTOR AND GENERATOR ROTORS, FIELD COILS, ETC.
