    Abstract: A rotor for an electric machine comprises a rotor core that defines a rotor slot having a central portion and an end portion. The end portion has a maximum width that is greater than a maximum width of the central portion immediately adjacent the end portion. A perimeter of the rotor slot at the end portion includes a plurality of segments extending between a first extremity at the maximum width of the end portion and a second extremity at the maximum width of the end portion. The plurality of segments include segments with different radii that decrease in magnitude from the center axis to the first extremity, and from the center axis to the second extremity.

    Abstract: A rotor assembly for an electric machine, e.g., of an electrified powertrain, includes a rotor having inner and outer diameter surfaces, and a rotor shaft connected to and surrounded by the rotor. The rotor has equally-spaced rotor magnetic poles each having a quadrature-axis (“q-axis”) and a pair of direct-axes (“d-axes”). At each of magnetic pole of the rotor, the rotor defines at least three arcuate notches, including a center notch bisected by the q-axis and a pair of additional arcuate notches symmetrically flanking the center notch. The rotor may include embedded permanent magnets, which may be arranged in a dual V-shaped configuration. Each additional notch may be positioned within a sweep of a top-layer opening angle of the magnets. The center notch and/or the pair of additional notches may define tangentially-continuous fillets which smoothly transition the notch into the outer diameter surface.

    Abstract: Rotor flux control in a permanent magnet (PM) electric machine involves controlling fluid flow through the rotor based on the torque versus speed operating point of the PM machine. When the torque at a given speed falls below a predetermined threshold, the rotor receives a reduced fluid flow compared to when the torque is above the threshold. Fluid flow through the stator is controlled in an inverse manner relative to the rotor's fluid flow such that when the rotor experiences reduced fluid flow, the stator receives an increased fluid flow. This approach enables efficient control of the rotor's magnetic flux, enhancing the performance and efficiency of the PM electric machine during various operating conditions.
