A process for polymerizing ethylene is provided in which very small concentrations of a quinone alkide, such as 3,5ditertiarybutyl-p-quinone methide, are employed in the reaction medium. The quinone alkide modifies the properties of the resulting polymers, particularly by providing both improved strength and optical properties.

POLYAMIDES CAN BE TAILORED TO HAVE MORE WORKABLE PROPERTIES BY BLENDING WITH A MINOR PORTION OF AN INORGANIC THIOCYANATE SUCH AS SODIUM OR POTASSIUM THIOCYANATE. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AMMONIUM THIOCYANATE, WHICH HAS THE OPPOSITE EFFECT ON MELT VISCOSITY, THE BLENDS RAISE MELT VISCOSITY, AND LOWER THE NORMAL FREEZING POINT. INDIVIDUAL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE EXTRUDED OR MOLDED POLYAMIDE BLEND REMAIN THE SAME OR ARE IMPROVED, EXCEPT WITH AMMONIUM THIOCYANATE WHICH REDUCES TENSILE STRENGTH AND ELONGATION.

A METHOD IS PROVIDED IN WHICH GOLD IS RECOVERED FROM DILUTE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS THEREOF BY CONTACTING SUCH SOLUTIONS WITH A WATER-INSOLUBLE ETHYLENE POLYMER CONTAINING CARBOXYLATE AND/OR AMIDE GROUPS. THE GOLD BECOMES ASSOCIATED WITH THE CARBOXYLATE AND/OR AMIDE GROUPS OF THE POLYMER AND CAN BE RECOVERED BY BURNING THE POLYMER TO RECOVER AN ASH ENRICHED IN GOLD.
