The invention provides for an inflatable intra ocular lens/lens retainer or a system of inflatable intra ocular lens/lens retainers, which are fitted into an aphakic eye, to substantially occupy the space previously held by the crystalline lens to retain and secure the position of delicate intra ocular structures of the eye. The inflatable lens/lens retainer may also be used suspend optical interfaces along the visual axis of the eye. The inflatable intra ocular lens/lens retainer may be pressed against residual elements of the lens capsule to re-establish accommodation. In the absence of a lens capsule, the inflatable intra ocular lens/lens retainer may be compressed directly by the ciliary muscle to alter the refractive state of the eye.

A disinfectant cap for sterile liquid dispensers is disclosed. The cap for a dispenser for sterile liquid has a hollow container for storing the sterile liquid and a dispensing end having an outlet port, wherein the cap comprises a biocide-retaining element secured to the inner surface of the cap and is configured to contact the outlet port of the dispenser when in the closed position.

An adaptive lens system comprises i) a lens compartment with a transparent cover; ii) a deformable transparent optical element mounted in the lens compartment which forms a sealed upper chamber in the lens compartment between the transparent cover and the upper surface of the optical element, and also defining a lower region external to the lower surface of the optical element; iii) a first transparent fluid medium in the upper chamber and a second transparent fluid medium in the lower region, the first and second fluid media having different refractive indices; iv) a structural element located in and movable in the upper chamber relative to the deformable optical element to mechanically engage the deformable optical element to thereby alter the curvature of the deformable optical element, thereby altering the refractive power or the prismatic effect of the adaptive lens system.

A method and apparatus for removing an air lock from the upstream side of a microfilter in a device for dispensing a sterile liquid from a storage container by forcing the liquid through a microfilter. The device include a first inlet passageway communicating between the storage container and a chamber on the upstream side of the filter closable by a valve, and a second passageway communicating between the storage container and the upstream side of the filter closable by a second valve, and the method includes the steps of a) creating partial vacuum in the chamber on the upstream side of the microfilter to thereby open the first valve and draw the liquid from the storage container through the first passageway into the chamber, and into the contact with the upstream side of the filter, b) closing the first and second valves and increasing the air pressure in the chamber, and c) opening the second valve thereby releasing air under pressure from the chamber through the second passageway.

A disinfectant cap for sterile liquid dispensers is disclosed. The cap includes a biocide-containing reservoir separated from the hollow interior of the cap by a rigid partition having an aperture therein for receiving the outlet port of the dispensing end of the dispenser, the cap being configured such that when in a closed configuration, the outlet port of the dispensing end extends through the aperture into the biocide-containing reservoir and the rigid partition is configured such that when the cap is removed from the dispensing end the biocide is retained in the reservoir. This may be achieved by selecting the size of the aperture such that when the cap is removed from the dispensing end the biocide is retained in the reservoir by surface tension. Or the partition may be provided with a hinged flap which seals the aperture when the cap is removed from the dispensing end and which is moved away from the aperture when the outlet port extends through the aperture.

A safe, portable apparatus for sterilization of saline or other liquids is provided. There is provided a device for sterilizing and storing liquids comprising a housing, a hollow cyliner formed in the housing having an open first end and a closed second end, a piston sealingly mounted for sliding within the cylinder, the piston and the cylinder thereby forming a closed chamber for receiving the liquid, the chamber provided with a sealable opening for introducing the liquid to the chamber, means for biassing the piston into the cylinder thereby applying pressure to the liquid, means within the housing for heating the liquid, and fluid discharge means for discharging the liquid when sterilized.
