A perpendicular recording write head has ferromagnetic first and second pole pieces which are connected at a back gap and an insulation stack with a write coil layer embedded therein is located between the first and second pole pieces and between a head surface of the write head and the back gap. The second pole piece has a pole tip which is located at the head surface and a recessed ferromagnetic write shield layer. A nonmagnetic isolation layer is located between the second pole piece and the write shield layer and at least one ferromagnetic stud is magnetically connected between the first pole piece layer and the write shield layer and is located between the head surface and the insulation stack.

The invention is a magnetic transducer with separated read and write heads for perpendicular recording. The write head has a trailing shield that extends from the return pole piece toward the main pole piece to form the write gap at the air-bearing surface. One embodiment of the trailing shield is a two part structure with a pedestal and a much smaller tip that confronts the main pole piece at the gap. In one embodiment a sink of non-magnetic, electrically conductive material is disposed in the separation gap between the read head and the flux bearing pole piece. The sink is preferably made of copper and does not extend to the ABS.

A magnetic transducer with a write head with one or more coil layers and a pedestal pole piece on P1 is disclosed. In one embodiment the first and second coils and the P1 pedestal are formed on essentially planarized surfaces. The P1 pedestal defines the zero throat height (ZTH) with a 90 degree apex angle which cuts down flux leakage and improves efficiency. The first and second coils are disposed on opposite sides of the gap layer. The write head preferably has upper and lower back flux closure pieces in contact with the pole pieces to complete the back of the yoke. Various combinations of these features allow heads according to the invention to be made with a very short yoke with resulting improved efficiency. In alternative embodiments the coil below the gap layer may be omitted and/or an additional coil above the gap layer may be added.

Heads for perpendicular recording using a floating-trailing shield as part of the magnetic circuit for writing magnetic domains in the recording media are described. The floating-trailing shield is separated from the main pole piece by a layer of non-magnetic material along its entire length and the air bearing surface of the floating-trailing shield is substantially larger than that of the main pole piece. The reluctance between the trailing shield and the underlayer in the recording medium is made so low that both are at the same magnetomotive force (or potential), so that no direct connection is needed between the floating-trailing shield and the yoke. When the head is used in a storage system with a magnetic recording medium with a soft underlayer, the floating-trailing shield is, in effect, magnetically shorted to the return pole piece during recording. In a second embodiment of the invention the floating-trailing shield extends around the sides of the main pole piece to reduce the off-track magnetic field.
