摘要: A single-mode optical waveguide fiber designed to limit power penalty due to four wave mixing and a method of making the waveguide is disclosed. Variations in properties, e.g., radius or refractive index, of the waveguide fiber core provide a total dispersion which varies along the length of the waveguide. The algebraic sum of products of length times total dispersion is controlled to a pre-selected value for each waveguide fiber which makes up a system link Proper choice of total dispersion variation magnitude and sub-length results in a system link wherein a signal travels only short distances in waveguide portions having total dispersion near zero. However, the variation of the total dispersion provides a system link which has a pre-selected dispersive effect on the signal over a selected wavelength range. The dispersive effect on the signal can be chosen to be essentially zero. A number of techniques for fabricating DM fiber are also disclosed.

摘要: Disclosed is a dispersion controlled optical waveguide fiber, and telecommunication systems using such a waveguide fiber, in which the end to end total dispersion and total dispersion slope is controlled by varying the refractive index profile along the fiber length. The waveguide fiber includes length portions each of which is characterized by total dispersion having a magnitude and sign and total dispersion slope having a magnitude and sign. The magnitudes and signs of total dispersion and total dispersion slope of respective length portions are chosen to provide for the optical waveguide fiber a desired end to end total dispersion and total dispersion slope. An advantage is achieved in the present invention by designing the refractive index profiles of the length portions to have total dispersion and total dispersion slope of opposite sign.

摘要: An optical fiber having optical characteristics that vary along its length is made by assembling a plurality of cylindrical glass or soot tablets into or along a glass tablet alignment device, then fused into monolithic assembly. If desired, additional glass may be applied to the assembly before or after the fusing step. A vacuum is preferably applied during the fusing step. Each tablet preferably contains a core region, and it optionally contains a layer of cladding glass. Adjacent tablets are capable of forming optical fiber sections having different optical properties. Prior to consolidating the glass particles, chlorine preferably flows through or around the tablets and alignment device. The resultant draw blank can be drawn into a low loss optical fiber having short transition regions between adjacent areas of fiber. This method is particularly useful for making dispersion managed single-mode optical fibers.

摘要: Disclosed is a method of making a polarization retaining single-mode optical fiber. Longitudinal grooves are formed on opposite sides of a cylindrically-shaped core perform having a glass core surrounded by cladding glass. The core preform is inserted into a glass tube, the tube is shrunk onto the core preform, and the interface between the core preform and the tube is fused to form a solid preform having longitudinal apertures on opposite sides of the core. An etchant gas is flowed through the apertures to enlarge the apertures into holes having a substantially round cross-section. Inserted into each aperture is a stress rod formed of glass having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the cladding glass. The resultant draw blank is drawn to form a single-mode optical fiber having a core that is subjected to a stress-induced birefringence.

摘要: Optical waveguide fiber having low water peak as well as optical waveguide fiber preforms and methods of making optical waveguide fiber preforms from which low water peak and/or low hydrogen aged attenuation optical waveguide fibers are formed, including optical waveguide fiber and preforms made via OVD. The fibers may be hydrogen resistant, i.e. exhibit low hydrogen aged attenuation. A low water peak, hydrogen resistant optical waveguide fiber is disclosed which exhibits an optical attenuation at a wavelength of about 1383 nm which is less than or equal to an optical attenuation exhibited at a wavelength of about 1310 nm.

摘要: A method of making a glass article such as an optical waveguide preform is disclosed. The method comprises drawing a rod in at least two steps. In the first step an elongated, consolidated preform having an aperture therethrough is drawn to a reduced diameter preform. The second step involves drawing the reduced diameter preform into a rod, preferably at a lower temperature than the first step. The method substantially reduces the formation of inclusions in the glass article during drawing.

摘要: Disclosed is a method of making an optical fiber preform having at least one annular region of depressed refractive index. A tube of silica doped with fluorine and/or boron is overclad with silica soot. A core rod is inserted into the overclad tube and the resultant assembly is heated while chlorine flows between the tube and the core rod to clean the adjacent surfaces. When the soot sinters, the tube collapses onto and fuses to the rod. The resultant tubular structure is formed into an optical fiber which exhibits low attenuation as a result of the low seed count at the interface between the inner core and the region that is doped with fluorine and/or boron.
