Nanocrystalline glass-ceramic materials based on .beta.-quartz solid solution Mg-rich phases formed in the system SiO.sub.2 --Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --MgO--Li.sub.2 O--TiO.sub.2 (ZnO, BaO, ZrO.sub.2, P.sub.2 O.sub.5). Articles made from the glass-ceramic materials exhibit a crystal phase assemblage of a fine-grained, microstructure which is predominantly .beta.-quartz, and at least one additional phase selected from enstatite and spinel, and having a composition which consists essentially of, in weight percent on the oxide basis, 40-65% SiO.sub.2, 10-14% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 5-25% MgO, 0.5-4% Li.sub.2 O, 5-15% TiO.sub.2, and up to 5% ZrO.sub.2, such that the sum of (TiO.sub.2 +ZrO.sub.2) is at least 9% The glass-ceramide article is particularly useful for memory disk applications.

This invention is directed at glass-ceramic articles, and methods for producing such articles, exhibiting Young's modulus between about 14 to 24.times.10.sup.6 psi and a fracture toughness in excess of 1.0 MPa.sqroot. in. The crystal phase assemblage is comprised predominately of generally uniformly-sized spinel-type crystals which are uniformly dispersed within a highly siliceous residual glass matrix phase. The composition of these glass-ceramic articles is consists essentially, expressed in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of 35-60% SiO.sub.2, 20-35% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-25% MgO, 0-25% ZnO, at least about 10% MgO+ZnO, 0-20% TiO.sub.2, 0-10% ZrO.sub.2, 0-2% Li.sub.2 O and 0-8% NiO. However, if the Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 constituent is present in an amount less than about 25%, the TiO.sub.2 +ZrO.sub.2 +NiO amount should be at least 5%. This invention relates to the preparation of a glass exhibiting a transition temperature normally below about 300.degree., a working temperature below about 400.degree., while, at the same time, exhibiting excellent resistance to attack by water. Specifically, the present invention discloses a glass consisting essentially in terms of mole percent on the oxide basis, of 15-35% P.sub.2 O.sub.5, 1-25% SO.sub.3, 30-55% ZnO, 0-25% R.sub.2 O, wherein R.sub.2 O is selected from the group consisting of 0-25% Li.sub.2 O, 0-25% Na.sub.2 O, and 0-25% K.sub.2 O, and up to a total of 15% of optional ingredients in the indicated proportions selected from the group consisting of 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10% MgO, 0-10% CaO, 0-10% SrO, 0-10% BaO, 0-10% MnO, 0-10% transition metal oxides and 0-15% Cl+F, as analyzed in weight percent.

A body is shaped from the mixture and cooled to room temperature.
