    摘要: A method of joining substrates at their lateral edges uses an elongated stiffening member to provide the requisite rigidity and strength for the application in which the joined substrate is to be used. The joining method is useful in any type of application that shares three functional requirements: The joined substrate sections must produce a unitary substrate construction with sufficient rigidity and strength to maintain the substrate sections in a joined position during a subsequent processing operation on the unitary substrate and thereafter when a completed assembly composed of joined substrates is installed as a component of another apparatus. Secondly, if components are formed on a substrate prior to joining, the integrity of those components must remain intact and uncontaminated during the joining process in a manner that would permit a subsequent operation to successfully use the components. Thirdly, the joint between the abutting lateral edges of two substrate sections must be both of sufficient strength for the intended purpose of the unitary substrate construction and have a width controllable within a range of widths comprising an acceptable tolerance allowed for a distance between two adjacent components that occur at the joint. The method is illustrated in the context of a writing head for use in an electrographic marking device, where the writing head may be manufactured to any desirable width by using the method of the present invention to join head member sections to form a working substrate, prior to attaching the conductors thereto that form the nib line.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing an electrostatic writing head automatically bonds conductors that form the writing electrodes of the head to a head member in a spaced parallel relationship according to the desired pitch of the writing head. The writing head includes a set of first surface conductive pads permanently fixed to a first surface of the first head member and disposed in a lengthwise row, and a set of second surface conductive pads permanently fixed to the second surface of the first head member. Each second surface conductive pad is paired with one of the first surface conductive pads, and the pair of pads is electrically connected by way of a conductive via extending through the first head member. The conductors are automatically bonded at one end to a respective one of the first surface conductive pads. The other end of each conductor is bonded to a bonding area that is later removed by cutting, thereby exposing the tips of the conductors in at least one line to produce the nib line of the head. The conductive pads may be arranged in a variety of novel arrangements that provide great flexibility in design in order to accommodate a wide variety of writing head pitches and lengths. The automatic bonding process is under processor control and is able to bond conductors according to a repetitive pattern consistent with a specific arrangement of the conductive pads.

    摘要: The invention discloses an elongate spliced member, particularly a tooth rack for a rapier loom, and a method for making same. The spliced member includes two elongate member segments joined at respective ends and having at least one through aperture positioned laterally from a respective first side to a second side adjacent the joined ends. An elongate recess is formed on opposed surfaces of the member segments, and each recess surrounds a respective aperture and communicates with the respective joined end of the segments. A carbon fiber strand is wound alternately through the aperture in each of the segments to splice the segments together end-to-end. The spliced member has the functional characteristics equivalent to an integrally formed member of the same length.

    摘要: A transition fitting for connecting plastic conduit to various elements of a fluid transfer system is provided which includes in combination a pressure deformable plastic conduit, rigid sleeve means inserted in one end of said plastic conduit in circumferential contact therewith, a pressure deformable rubbery resilient member extending around the conduit and sleeve in contact with said conduit, compression ring means extending around the conduit and sleeve having a radial face abutting one face of the resilient member and applying compressive pressure thereon, a radially expandable and contractible frusto-conical gripping member, said gripping member surrounding the conduit and sleeve and having a base portion engaging the other side of the compression ring, spaced surface engaging means on the gripper member in contact with the exterior of the conduit, a first body member surrounding the conduit and sleeve and confining the rubbery gasket against outward radial expansion, said body member and compression ring cooperating to reduce the axial thickness of the rubbery gasket to exert radial sealing pressure on the conduit, and a second body member surrounding the conduit and sleeve and having an internal frusto-conical surface mating with that of the gripping member, said first and second body members being axially movable relative to one another to reduce the distance between them to compress the rubbery gasket axially and radially inwardly and the gripping member radially inwardly against the conduit.

The cover includes a pair of "C" shaped mating cavity sections which are made of plastic and which are shaped and sized to fit around the top, sides and bottom of the nut and a metal hinge clip which is adapted to be permanently snap-locked into the lower end of each cavity section.     摘要: A seal for utility meters and the like has a generally hollow pendular transparent body with two openings spaced along its upper surface connecting with a central cavity. An opaque plastic locking member is inserted into the cavity and permanently connected to the body. For locking the seal irreversibly, a generally U-shaped fastening shackle, each end of which is reversibly bent to form a tang, is inserted through the openings in the upper surface of the body down into the cavity and into locking engagement with the body and the locking member. Frangible fingers and leaves formed in the locking member are designed to provide visual evidence of any attempt to tamper with the seal whether successful or not.
