    摘要: A laser-optical write and read process whereby a thermally alterable recording layer which contains liquid-crystalline compounds in homogeneous planar orientation and forms part of a multilayer, sheet-like recording material is written by means of a write laser beam with analogue or digital data in the form of thermally altered areas, whereafter the written data are read by means of a read laser beam, including: analyzing the light transmitted or reflected by the recording material, and reading the data by determining the polarization-optical contrast between the thermally altered and the unaltered areas and/or utilizing for this purpose the interference of the light rays which form from the laser lightwaves in a Gaussian intensity distribution owing to the different phase velocities of the light in the center of thermally altered areas on the one hand and their thermally unaltered surroundings on the other.

    摘要: In a novel process for the reversible or irreversible production of an image by the imagewise action of energy on a recording layer, resulting in a pattern of surface charges which corresponds to the imagewise action of the energy, on the surface of the recording layer, the recording layer used is one which contains or consists of an organic material which solidifies in glassy form, is nonphotoconductive or only slightly photoconductive and has permanent dipoles, whereinthe pattern of surface charges is produced, without or almost without formation of free charge carriers, by reversible imagewise orientation of some or all of the permanent dipoles present in the recording layer, with the aid of an electric field applied imagewise.The novel process is advantageously carried out using a novel apparatus which comprises a suitable recording element, apparatus for the imagewise action of an electric field on the recording layer of the recording element and a counter-electrode which is in direct, non-frictional contact with the recording layer and can be removed again therefrom. The pattern of surface charges which is produced by the novel process can be treated with liquid or solid toners. The resulting toner image can then either be fixed on the recording layer or transferred from the recording layer to another surface, after which the pattern of surface charges can be deleted by uniform action of energy. Thereafter, a further image can be produced. In this way, it is possible to produce photocopies without the high voltage sources required in the conventional electrophotographic processes having to be used.

    摘要: Novel laser-optical recording elements which can be repeatedly erased and recorded on contain recording layers (a) which exhibit enantiotropic, ferroelectric smectic liquid crystalline (S.sub.c*) behavior, so that they can be switched back and forth between two thermodynamically stable, optically distinguishable ferroelectric smectic liquid crystalline S.sub.C* order states on exposure to a laser beam of sufficient luminous power, by applying an external electric field. The recording layers (a) themselves consist mainly or exclusively of novel polymers P having chiral mesogenic side groups. The novel polymers P are prepared using the novel monomers of the general formula I ##STR1## where R is hydrogen, chlorine or methyl, A is a flexible space-maintaining long-chain molecular moiety, and C is an optically active chiral molecular moiety and B is a mesogenic molecular moiety composed of at least three aromatic nuclei which are bonded linearly or virtually linearly to one another, or they are prepared using the novel monomers I which contain specially selected molecular moieties B in a novel combination with selected molecular moieties C.
