Disclosed are plastic copolymers of propylene with linear dienes having conjugated double bonds, in particular with butadiene, characterized by a molar ratio between the dienic units in configuration 1,2 and those in configuration 1,4 higher than 0.2, preferably higher than 1.Such copolymers are prepared by copolymerization of propylene with linear dienes in the presence of stereospecific catalysts comprising a halogen Ti compound supported on a Mg halide.The copolymers can be reacted with radically polymerizable monomers, thus obtaining functionalized products suited to be transformed into films having good adhesion characteristics.

Propylene polymer compositions having good transparency and improved impact resistance at low temperature comprising:a) 70 to 98% by weight crystalline copolymer of ethylene with propylene and/or with an alpha olefin of the formula H.sub.2 C=CHR where R is a C.sub.2-8 linear or branched alkyl radical and b) 2 to 30% by weight of an elastomeric propylene-ethylene copolymer. The portion of said copolymer b) soluble in xylene at room temperature has an intrinsic viscosity (I.V. 2) which satisfies the following relation:0.2.ltoreq.(I.V. 2/I.V. 1).times.(C.sub.2.sup.-).ltoreq.0.6where I.V. 1 is the intrinsic viscosity of the crystalline propylene copolymer, (C.sub.2.sup.-) is the ethylene weight content of b). The ratio between the ethylene weight content in b) and the weight of the xylene soluble portion is equal to or less than 1.5.The compositions are prepared by sequential polymerization of the monomers in the presence of Ziegler-Natta stereospecific catalysts which include a titanium compound supported on a magnesium dihalide in active form.

Disclosed are polypropylene compositions having high impact resistance at low temperatures, and improved whitening resistance. They comprise:(a) 60-90 parts by weight of polypropylene with an isotacticity index >90; and(b) 10-40 parts by weight of an ethylene/butene-1 polymeric mixture containing 50-95% by weight of polymerized ethylene, and consisting essentially of:20-95% by weight of a crystalline fraction (I) with crystallinity of the polyethylene type, that is insoluble in xylene at 23.degree. C.; and5-80% by weight of an ethylene/butene-1 amorphous copolymeric fraction (II), that is soluble in xylene at 23.degree. C., and contains 40-70% by weight of ethylene; and in which the weight ratio between total polymerized ethylene and the amorphous fraction (II) is 0.6-8.Such compositions are obtained by polymerization processes comprising the step of homopolymerizing propylene to stereoregular polymer, and a subsequent step of copolymerizing ethylene/butene-1 mixtures, said steps being effected by Ziegler-Natta stereospecific catalysts, which include a titanium compound carried on a magnesium halide in the active form.

The process comprises reacting a Ti compound having at least oe Ti-halogen linkage with either (1) a mixture of a hydrocarbyl electron-donor compound ED which does not contain active H atoms and an adduct (a) of a Mg dihalide with at least one hydrocarbyl electron-donor compound AH containing active H atoms, or (2) with an adduct (b) of at least a Mg dihalide with a compound AH and ED defined in (1), adducts (a) and (b) being obtained without co-grinding of the Mg dihalide with compounds AH and ED.

Crystalline polymers and copolymers of propylene having total MIL values>2 g/10 minutes, total [η] values in tetrahydronaphthalene at 135° C.≦2.8 dl/g, mW/MN values>20, a fraction insoluble in xylene at 25° C.≧94, and including from 10 to 60% by weight of a fraction (A) having [η]≧2.6, are prepared by way of sequential polymerization in at least two stages, in the presence of a particular Ziegler-Natta catalysts supported on magnesium halides. These polymers have high melt strength, high mechanical properties, and are particularly adequate for the manufacture of articles by using various conversion technologies, such as for example extrusion in thin sheets to be subjected to thermoforming, as well as for injection molding, and blow molding.
