摘要: An electro-optical device including a chiral nematic liquid crystal disposed between flat plates treated to weakly enforce molecular orientation along one preferred direction parallel to the plates. The plates are spaced by a distance small compared to the pitch of the helix typical in a bulk of the material, or the helix compensated by additives to ensure the equivalent situation. By an externally applied electric field the liquid crystal molecular orientation is rotated in a plane parallel to the plates away from the preferred orientation an angle the sign and size of which depends on the sign and magnitude of the field. The optical axis of the liquid crystal, oriented along the molecular orientation, is thus controlled by the external electric field in such a way as to make a linear light valve or other electro-optical device.

摘要: A device for influencing light has a polarizer, a ferroelectric or electroclinic response type liquid crystal halfwave plate whose liquid crystals are in the smectic phase with bookshelf geometry and have molecular axes which are rotatable around a first direction corresponding to the direction of incoming light in response to an electric field applied across the electrodes on either side of the halfwave plate, a quarter wave retarder plate, and a mirror. The polarizer, plates and mirror are arranged such that incoming light is passed from the polarizer through the liquid crystal plate and the retarder plate, and is reflected by the mirror in a second direction opposite to the first direction back through the retarder and the liquid crystal plate so as to provide a reflected polarized light plane to the polarizer. The polarizer has a first polarization direction set parallel to one electrically selectable molecular axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules, which is selected in response to a first electric field level. The retarder plate has its slow axis inclined either 45.degree. or 135.degree. relative to the optic axis of the liquid crystal. The liquid crystal, furthermore, is of a material which produces an angular difference 2.theta. in optic axis direction in response to a second electric field level whose polarity is opposite that of the first electric field level. This allows the device to rotate the reflected polarized light plane by an angle of 8.theta. in response to the second electric field level.

摘要: There is provided insect screening models to determine gastrointestinal absorption of different chemical compounds in vertebrates, and in particular humans, in order to improve the compound screening procedures/processes in the early drug discovery process. This offers many advantages relative to prior technologies since insect models are more reliable tools for the decision-making process than the existing in vitro models, and will speed up the drug screening process and reduce the late phase attrition rate. Moreover, it will reduce the number of mammals sacrificed during the drug discovery phase.

摘要: There is provided insect models that are aimed to reflect vertebrate blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration. Investigation of BBB penetration is extremely important in drug discovery; successful CNS drugs have to cross the BBB, while BBB penetration may cause unwanted side effects for peripheral acting drugs. Specifically, the present invention relates to the use of insects in screening for substances with a biological effect on the brain or central nervous system and/or effect on a disease or disorder of the brain or central nervous system. It further relates to use of such insects in screening for substances that have a desired biological activity and which do not cross the blood brain barrier.

摘要: A method and apparatus for condition diagnosing of a tap changer immersed in a cooling fluid, controlling and regulating an inductive power device, such as a transformer or reactor. The diagnosing method compares and evaluates expected heat exchanges between the tap changer and ambient air and the inductive power device, an expected amount of heat generated by the tap changer during operation, together with an actual temperature of the fluid. From the actual temperature, expected heat exchanges and expected generated heat, the heat balance in the system may be obtained and is used for disgnosing the operation conditions of the tap changer. The results from the condition diagnosing may be used as indicators that can alarm operators or may be sent as a data signal to remote and/or portable display means, such as a computer.
