Diisocyanates and isomeric mixtures of diisocyanates corresponding to the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, m and n are as defined herein are made by phosgenating diamines corresponding to the formula ##STR2## in which R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, m and n are as defined herein at a temperature of from -20.degree. to 250.degree. C. These diisocyanates are particularly useful as starting materials for the production of polyurethanes by the isocyanate polyaddition process.

A diisocyanate corresponding to the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, m and n are as defined herein is prepared by phosgenating a diamine corresponding to the formula ##STR2## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, m and n are as defined herein. The diisocyanate may contain C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -monoalkyl-substituted methylene-bis-(cyclohexylisocyanate)isomers in an amount of up to 40 wt. %. These new diisocyanates which are liquid at room temperature and compatible with polyols are particularly useful in the production of polyurethanes.

A process for the preparation of moldings, in particular resilient elements, which by virtue of a densified surface zone with substantially closed cells, have only a low water absorption, wherein a mixture comprising:(a) 100 parts by weight of an NCO-containing prepolymer, having an NCO content of from 3 to 6% by weight and based on organic diisocyanates and substantially linear polyester-polyols or polytetramethylene ether glycol,(b) from 0.5 to 1.6 parts by weight of water,(c) one or more catalysts, preferably a tertiary amine, in an amount of from 0.01 to 2.0 parts by weight and(d) assistants, with or without additives, is reacted in a closed mold, while undergoing densification, the surface temperature of the inner wall of the mold being from 50.degree. to 70.degree. Polyurethane-urea elastomers with improved temperature characteristics, in particular improved low temperature properties, good mechanical properties over a large temperature range and excellent resistance to hydrolysis, are obtained by reacting(A) a prepolymer, possessing cycloaliphatic NCO groups, which has been prepared from essentially difunctional polyhydroxy compounds and organic diisocyanates possessing at least one NCO group bonded to a cycloaliphatic structure, these reactants being used so as to give a ratio of total hydroxyl: NCO groups of from 1:1.2 to 1:10, with(B) 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-diamino-diphenylmethane, A and B being reacted in the molar ratio of from 1:0.8 to 1:1.2.
