Between the outer circumference of the central slide ring (11) and the inner circumference of the concentric slide ring (14) is provided an annular chamber (18) extending as far as the sliding surface (8c) of the common slide ring (8) and communicating with an inlet channel (23) provided in the housing and an outlet channel (24).

The spring arrangement (11) acts by way of a pressure sleeve (12) which is axially displaceable on the clamping bar. Disposed between the pressure sleeve (12) and the clamping sleeve (13) is a second wedge transmission assembly (10) with freely movable balls which respectively bear against two cone surfaces which are inclined in mutually opposite relationship on the mutually facing ends of the two sleeves (12, 13) and successively against two further cone surfaces which are inclined in opposite relationship on the support ring (15). In the release stroke movement in opposite relationship to the clamping direction a piston-cylinder unit (7, 8) initially acts on the clamping sleeve (13) and then also on an annular shoulder (3a) of the clamping bar (FIG. 1).

Arranged radially within the clamping jaws (10) and axially movably is a clamping sleeve (15) which comprises in the region of each end (10a, 10b) of the clamping jaws ( 10) a clamping cone (17, 18) by means of which the clamping jaws (10) are movable radially outwards parallel to themselves and their ends (10a, 10b) can be pressed against the associated groove flanks (9, 12). The clamping jaws (10) comprise at both their ends (10a10b) clamping surfaces (11, 14) whose angular position relative to the central axis (A) is adapted to the groove flanks (9, 12), so that during the whole clamping process there is surface contact between the clamping surfaces (b 11,14) and the groove flanks (9, 12).

For the attachment of a tool provided with a cylindrical or frusto-conical shank to a rotating machine spindle at one end of the machine spindle a complementary reception opening for the shank is provided. The shank contains a coaxial bore and a plurality of slots distributed in the circumferential direction and extending through radially to the bore, which divide the shank within the reception opening into segments. In the region of the slots the shank widens out under the influence of centrifugal forces more than does the region of the spindle surrounding the shank. Thus the radial guidance of the tool is not lost even at very high rotation rates of 10,000 r.p.m. and above. A support shoulder on an annular collar of the tool prevents axial reshifting of the shank by reason of the axial stress of a clamping device and improves the rigidity of the tool-spindle connection. The bore extends through the annular collar. The external diameter of the annular collar is preferably made larger than according to standard. The end face of the spindle, intended to abut on the support shoulder, is radially inwardly provided with an annular recess and supports the tool on a maximum possible diameter. In addition a shape-engaging coupling can be provided between tool and spindle.

Each of the spool units includes a decentralized memory, into which one of the centrally stored operational parameter sets can be loaded individually for each spool unit by a call-up switch. A central control determines for respective groups of spool units a predetermined sequence, in which the operational parameter sets can be called up by the spool units. The classification device determines the thread defect, preferably individually for each spool unit, and indeed respectively referred onto the last wound gauged length of the thread. The winding device of the spool unit is operated with the maximum possible rpm. The rpm is reduced if a predetermined maximum thread speed is reached.

The base holder has a fixing shank, an attachment flange connected thereto, as well as a drive shaft rotatably mounted therein. On the mutually facing ends of the drive shaft and the driven shaft there are provided coupling parts which can couple without relative rotation therebetween.
