A shut-off valve that is located between a brake master cylinder and wheel brakes is closed to maintain a wheel-brake pressure and thus a braking force. To maintain a constant braking force, no current must be applied to an electric motor of the brake booster. The vehicle braking system can be used as a parking brake. The shut-off valve is present if the vehicle braking system has an anti-lock control device.
