By forming color filters (1) in a layer between the data lines (56) and the pixel electrodes (58), the distance between the data lines (56) and the pixel electrodes (58) is increased, reducing parasitic capacitance generated therebetween. Effective voltage application to the pixel electrodes (58) is thereby accomplished, allowing increase in contrast. No decrease in transmittance is caused because the thickness of the planarizing film (2) is not increased.

A wiring layer, an insulation film and a first orientation layer are formed on the first substrate between it and the liquid crystal layer. Alignment control assistance electrodes (1) are formed between the substrate (60) and a color filter (61) in areas covering the alignment control windows (65), and supplied with a voltage of a different polarity from that to be applied to the opposing pixel electrodes. With this arrangement, an electric field is formed in areas with the alignment control window formed thereon, whereby an alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules is more strongly controlled.
