The second silicon-containing olefin copolymer of the present invention is obtainable by copolymerizing ethylene, an α-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms and a specific silicon-containing ethylene monomer, and has a molar ratio of ethylene to α-olefin of from 99/1 to 30/70, an intrinsic viscosity, as measured in decalin at 135° C., of from 0.1 to 10 dl/g, a content of the ethylene monomer of from 0.1 to 10 mol % based on 100 mol % of the total amounts of ethylene, α-olefin and the ethylene monomer. These copolymers may be cross-linked and then submitted to use, and have a high cross-linking rate, excellent productivity, heat ageing properties, weathering resistance. They, further, can provide a rubber composition capable of preparing molded articles having excellent properties such as scratch resistance, resistance to compression set, electric properties and strength. They furthermore can provide sealing materials, potting materials, coating materials and adhesives made from the composition and also provide cross-linked articles of the composition.

The ethylenic copolymer rubber according to the present invention is a novel and useful ethylenic copolymer rubber which can be cross-linked at a high velocity and is superior in scorching stability, in workability and in moldability, of which cross-linked product is superior in the mechanical properties, such as the cross-linked rubber strength etc., and in the form-preservability. A cross-linkable rubber composition containing this ethylenic copolymer rubber is utilized for producing, for example, cross-linked molded rubber product for use as sealing element and automobile weather strip sponge. The ethylenic copolymer rubber according to the present invention comprises a random copolymer made of ethylene, an &agr;-olefin having 3-20 carbon atoms and a triene represented by the formula (1) given below as well as an optionally incorporated non-conjuagted polyene having two or more polymerizable double bonds in the molecule, wherein the mole ratio of ethylene/&agr;-olefin is 95/5-40/60 and the triene content is 0.1-10 mole %, the intrinsic viscosity (&eegr;) determined in decalin at 135° C. is 0.1-10 dl/g and wherein the ratio of the above intrinsic viscosity (&eegr;) versus the converted intrinsic viscosity (&eegr;)blank′ converted to a linear ethylene/propylene copolymer having 70 mole % of ethylene units determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC, at 140° C., in o-dichlorobenzene solvent) of the ethylenic copolymer rubber, i.e. (&eegr;)/(&eegr;)blank′=g′, is 0.5-0.95. in which R1 and R2 denote each, independently of each other, hydrogen atom, methyl or ethyl and R3 and R4 denote each, independently of each other, methyl or ethyl.

The higher .alpha.-olefin copolymers obtained in accordance with the present invention are copolymers derived from higher .alpha.-olefin and non-conjugated diene represented by the following general formula [I], and (a) the non-conjugated diene content thereof is from 0.01 to 30 mol %, and (b) the intrinsic viscosity [.eta.], as measured in decahydronaphthalene at 135.degree. C., of said copolymer is from 1.0 to 10.0 dl/g. ##STR1## The invention also provides a process for preparing such higher .alpha.-olefin copolymers as illustrated above, and vulcanization products obtained from said copolymers.Furthermore, the invention provides vulcanizable compositions containing rubber comprising of the above-mentioned higher .alpha.-olefin copolymers and a specific diene rubber or a specific ethylene/.alpha.-olefin copolymer rubber.

Disclosed is a process for preparing an ethylene-.alpha.-olefin-nonconjugated polyene random copolymer comprising random copolymerizing (a) ethylene, (b) an .alpha.-olefin of 3 or more carbon atoms and (c) a nonconjugated polyene in the presence of a metallocene catalyst containing a specific metallocene compound. The ethylene-.alpha.-olefin-nonconjugated polyene random copolymer prepared by the process has such properties that (i) the copolymer contains units derived from ethylene (a) and units derived from the .alpha.-olefin of 3 or more carbon atoms (b) in a molar ratio of 40/60 to 95/5 �(a)/(b)!, (ii) the iodine value is 1 to 50, (iii) the intrinsic viscosity (.eta.) is more than 0.1 dl/g and less than 8.0 10 dl/g, (iv) the intensity ratio D of T.alpha..beta. to T.alpha..alpha. in the .sup.13 C-NMR spectrum, T.alpha..beta./T.alpha..alpha., is not more than 0.5, (v) the B value is 1.00 to 1.50, (vi) the glass transition temperature Tg is not higher than -50.degree. C., and (vii) the ratio g.eta.* of the intrinsic viscosity (.eta.) of this copolymer defined above to the intrinsic viscosity (.eta.).sub.blank of a straight-chain ethylene-propylene copolymer having the same weight-average molecular weight as this random copolymer and having an ethylene content of 70% by mol, (.eta.)/(.eta.).sub.blank, is more than 0.9. Also disclosed is a vulcanizable rubber composition containing the random copolymer. The ethylene-.alpha.-olefin-nonconjugated polyene random copolymer and the rubber composition are excellent in mechanical strength, weathering resistance, ozone resistance, processability, low-temperature flexibility and heat resistance.
