The electric double layer capacitor according to the present invention is particularly suited to large current, quick discharge applications.

The invention is directed to the provision of an electric double layer capacitor electrode that can fully utilize the electrode performance of a graphite-like carbon material by preventing degradation of the cycle characteristics. More specifically, the invention provides an electric double layer capacitor electrode constructed by laminating a polarizable electrode layer containing a carbon material having graphite-like microcrystalline carbon to at least one side of a sheet-like current collector, wherein the carbon material has a BET specific surface area of 800 m2/g or less as measured by a nitrogen adsorption method, and the sheet-like current collector has interstices on the side that contacts the polarizable electrode layer.
