A method and system for independent control of multiple windows in a graphics display system. Intensity data for a first plurality of pixels is specified for an underlying image within a first window. A first window identifier is associated with each of the first plurality of pixels. Next, intensity data for a second plurality of pixels is specified for an overlying image within a second window. A second window identifier is associated with each of the second plurality of pixels. The intensity data and window identifiers for the overlying and underlying images are then stored in separate locations within a frame buffer. Finally, an overall image is displayed, wherein the overall image contains the underlying image and the overlying image superimposed over at least a portion of the underlying image. The intensity data and the window identifiers are utilized to display the overall image. The window identifiers provide for independent control of the first and second windows so that the first plurality of pixels can be updated while the overall image is displayed.

The interpolation or enlargement may be provided sequentially in two (2) coordinate directions (e.g. horizontal and vertical) or alternatively in only one of such directions. The enlargement may be alternatively provided simultaneously in both coordinate directions. The enlargement of the image portion in each of the coordinate directions may be obtained by interpolating video pixel(s) in such coordinate direction between each pair of adjacent video pixels in such coordinate direction and by otherwise interpolating graphics pixel(s) between such pair of adjacent pixels in such coordinate direction. In other words, graphics pixel(s) may be provided between each pair of adjacent pixels in each of the coordinate directions when one or both of the adjacent pixels in such pair are graphics. The enlargement may be to any extent desired in the coordinate directions. The video pixels may be in a YUV or YCrCb format where Y represents the hue or intensity of the image and Cr and Cb (or U and V) represent the two (2) quadrature components of the chrominance or color. For each interpolated video pixel, an interpolation may be provided between the values in the adjacent pixels on the opposite sides of such interpolated pixel.

The method divides the screen into regions and analyzes successive end points and vectors based upon their region to determine trivial picks and trivial no picks. Non-trivial conditions are analyzed by determining the position of the line segment being processed relative to two selected pick window vertices. Apparatus for implementing pick detect is provided that accomplishes pick detect as part of graphics pipeline processing. In the trivial pick or no pick cases, the apparatus does not slow pipeline operation, while in a non-trivial case, extra processing cycles are required.

A technique for efficiently drawing wide lines in a graphics display system by method and apparatus which includes identifying a wide line to be drawn; drawing a first line of pixels of a wide line; determining if a next line in the wide line has a different first coordinate value from a first coordinate value of the first line; generating at least one additional pixel value for the next line if the first coordinate value of the next line is different from the first coordinate value of an immediately previously drawn line; repeating the steps until the wide line has been completely drawn.
