The present invention relates to a device and a method for communicating in a mobile communication system. The method provides a carrier signal having a plurality of frames. Each frame has a plurality of time slots, and each time slot comprises a plurality of transmission bits. A group of time slots are assigned to a communication channel. A traffic burst signal having a plurality of traffic symbols is transmitted over the communication channel by transmitting a first preamble over one of the assigned time slots, and transmitting a second preamble and at least one of the traffic symbols over at least one of the other assigned time slots. The second preamble occupies fewer transmission bits than the first preamble. The apparatus for transmitting a telephony signal over an RF channel includes a modem receiving a digitized PCM telephony signal and producing a traffic burst signal, and a transmitting unit in communication with the modem for transmitting a FDMA/TDMA signal carrying a plurality of traffic burst signals. At least one of the traffic burst signals carries a limited preamble message including a header field and a unique word field and at least one digitized voice message associated with a telephone call. Another traffic burst signal carries at least one signal acquisition message including a unique word field.

A method and system for alerting a mobile terminal in a high-attenuation propagation environment within a mobile satellite communication network are disclosed herein. The method comprises receiving an incoming call directed to the mobile terminal, generating a paging signal in response to the incoming call, determining whether the mobile terminal has failed to receive the paging signal, and generating an alerting signal in response to the determination that the mobile terminal has failed to receive the paging signal. The system comprises a plurality of mobile terminals capable of receiving voice calls via a satellite; a satellite adapted to communicate with each of the mobile terminals, the satellite transmitting a spot beam to the mobile terminals; at least one gateway in communication with the satellite, the gateway having a first signal generator for producing a paging signal in response to an incoming call, logic for determining whether the mobile terminal has detected the paging signal, and a second signal generator for producing a high-power alerting signal in response to the logic; a first detector in the mobile terminal for detecting the paging signal; and a second detector in the mobile terminal for detecting the alerting signal.

A system and method for implementing single hop space segment terminal to terminal connections. The system includes a satellite-based radio frequency (RF) communication link for conveying multiple communication channels over the space segment via one or more spot beams. A terrestrial supervisory transceiver such as a gateway station is provided in communication with the satellite-based communication link. Mobile hand-held terminals (HHTs), herein first and second access terminals, may be located within one or more of the spot beams to communicate with one another via a single hop connection through a satellite of the system. A switch is provided for communication switching with the satellite of the system for the multiple communication channels to couple the first access terminal and the second access terminal over the space segment via one or more of the spot beams. The terrestrial supervisory transceiver or gateway is provided in communication with the satellite switch via the satellite-based communication link for implementing the single hop space segment terminal to terminal connection.

An approach for minimizing variation in transmit power of synchronized signals that are destined to a satellite is disclosed. A gateway station system for communicating with a communication satellite includes a multiple signal sources which generate the synchronized signals. The gateway station system utilizes a control logic that is coupled to the signal sources. The control logic operates to offset selectively transmission times of a portion of the synchronized signals according to a predetermined distribution and an offset period. The predetermined distribution specifies about half the number of the synchronized signals are to be offset. The offset period is half a symbol period. The terminals within the satellite communication system has a receiver that receives the synchronized signal from the communication satellite. Each of the terminals also includes an offset-determination logic that is coupled to the receiver and determines whether the synchronized signals are offset based upon a received assignment message. The assignment message has a control flag field that indicates whether the received signal is offset.

An apparatus and method, for use in a satellite-based communications network, for positioning offset zones in a spot beam coverage area to maximize call duration. The apparatus and method employs a spot beam segregator and an offset zone arranger. The spot beam segregator segregates a coverage area of a spot beam generated by a satellite in the network into at least one offset zone based on respective propagation time periods required for signals to travel between the satellite and respective different locations in the coverage area. The offset zone arranger arranges each offset zone such that each respective center of each one offset zone overlaps a respective geographical location in the coverage area, with each respective geographic location having a respective access terminal density greater than any other geographical region within its respective offset zone. The burst offset to be assigned to each single-offset zone is then determined based on the propagation delay at each respective highest access terminal density region in the respective zones. Therefore, within each offset zone, the amount of access terminals whose guard time between bursts received and transmitted is optimized, and call duration is effectively maximized.

An approach for is provided for adapting to a variety of link propagation conditions is disclosed. A source terminal generates a packet data burst that includes a header and an optional payload. The header is modulated using a default modulation scheme and is coded using a default coding scheme. A switch is configured to receive and to forward the packet data burst. A destination terminal is configured to demodulate the header using the default modulation scheme and the default coding scheme, and to examine the header to determine a particular coding scheme and a particular modulation scheme associated with the payload. The protocol can be applied to any radio communication system, particularly, to a satellite communication system with multiple satellite terminals.
