This invention provides for an apparatus and a method for detecting the presence of pathogenic agents with sensors containing functionalized nanostructures integrated into circuits on silicon chips. The nanostructures are functionalized with molecular transducers that recognize and bind targeted analytes which are diagnostic of the pathogenic agent of interest. The molecular transducer includes a receptor portion, which binds the analyte, and an anchor portion that attaches to the nanostructure. Upon binding of the analyte, a change in molecular configuration represented by the newly formed receptor-analyte complex creates a force that is transmitted to the nanostructure via the anchor portion of the transducer. The effect of the force transmitted to the nanostructure is to alter its conductivity. The change in conductivity of the nanotube thus represents a signal that indicates the presence of the pathogenic agent of interest.

A technique for preparing a wide range of fulvalenes by a reductive procedure is described. The procedure involves reducing an organic halide to its corresponding partially hydrogenated derivative which is reacted with fluoboric acid to yield a fluoborate. Deprotonation of the fluoborate yields the desired compound. The described technique maximizes the yield and quality of fulvalenes produced and permits the preparation of thia, selena and tellura fulvalenes.

A method for the synthesis of well-defined rod-coil block copolymers consisting of P3HT donor and C60 acceptor chromophores (P3HT-b-P(SxAy)-C60) in a molecular architecture is reported for use in bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. In thin films of the resulting block copolymer, reproducible self-assembly into well-defined “nanofibrils” is observed. This is the first example of a block copolymer containing a C60 derivative that shows exclusively a nanofibrilar structure. A substantial improvement in device performance is achieved when the block copolymer is used as a “surfactant” for controlling the interface morphology of the P3HT:PCBM donor-acceptor phase domains within the composite.

Thermally re-mendable cross-linked polymeric materials that can be repeatedly mended or repaired by simple thermal treatment. The polymeric materials are made by polymerizing furan monomers and maleimide monomers via the Diels-Alder (DA) reaction wherein the furan monomers have at least three furan moieties and the maleimide monomers have at least three maleimide moieties. The intermonomer linkages that form between the furan and maleimide monomers are thermally reversible and do not require the addition of catalysts, additional monomer or special surface treatments.
