The present invention relates to a gear-driven bearing unit comprising a housing (110), a drive gear (120) and a rolling element bearing, the rolling element bearing comprising: an outer member (130) provided with teeth (135) for meshing with teeth of the drive gear, an inner member (141, 142) and at least one row of rolling elements (151, 152) disposed between the inner and outer members. At one axial side of the unit, the housing is connected to the inner member and encloses the outer member. At the opposite axial side, there is a first radial gap between a radially inner surface of the outer member and a radially outer surface of the inner member. Further, a second radial gap exists between a radially outer surface of the outer member and a radially inner surface of the housing. According to the invention, the first and second radial gaps are sealed by first and second seals (180, 190), each of which comprises first (181, 191) and second (182, 192) radial sealing lips that bear against respective first and second radially oriented counterfaces (137, 138). Furthermore, the unit is lubricated with a grease comprising a calcium-based thickener or comprising calcium salt additives and the teeth (135) on the outer member are made of a bearing-grade steel that has been subjected to a hardening treatment which diffuses nitrogen into the surface of the teeth.
