    摘要: A mini-jacket is installed using a caisson. The caisson is a tubular pipe that is either pre-existing in the field or specifically installed before hand, such that the bottom end of the caisson is driven into the ocean floor and its top end extends above the water surface. The mini-jacket is a structural frame with pile sleeves at the comers and a caisson sleeve located within the perimeter of the frame. The mini-jacket is configured and installed such that in its installed position its top surface is above water surface while its lower end remains above the ocean floor. During installation, the mini-jacket is lifted and lowered so that its caisson sleeve slides over the caisson. The caisson sleeve has weight bearing plates welded at the top. The mini-jacket is lowered until the weight bearing plates rest on the caisson, thereby transferring the weight of the mini-jacket to the caisson. The caisson alone supports the weight of the mini-jacket during the pile installation. In pile installation, the piles are driven through the pile sleeves of the mini-jacket into the ocean floor. The piles are then rigidly connected to the pile sleeves at the top. The deck of the mini-jacket is thus supported on the piles. Once the mini-jacket is installed, one or more wells can be drilled through the caisson in the conventional manner, and more wells that are supported at the mini-jacket can be added subsequently.

    摘要: A thin, integrated carbon/insulator structure, and a method for fabricating same, for use in a primary electrochemical cell. A quantity of a wet carbon slurry material including a mixture of carbon black, water and/or isopropyl alcohol, and a binder such as finely-divided "Teflon" in suspension, is deposited onto a porous fiberglass substrate and rolled to a prescribed thickness. The rolling operation causes a portion of the slurry material to diffuse into the surface of the porous fiberglass substrate and permanently adhere to and unite with a surface portion of the fiberglass substrate in an integrated, interlocking fashion.The fiberglass substrate having the layer of carbon slurry material integrated therewith is then dried to cause the layer of carbon slurry material to dry and shrink to the form of a layer of carbon plaque having a network of cracks produced therethrough in a random pattern as a result of the shrinkage during drying. The layer of carbon plaque at this stage represents an aggregation of porous carbon globules. The layer of carbon plaque is re-rolled to close cracks at the upper surface of the layer while simultaneously establishing a desired thickness for the layer. After curing the above arrangement to increase adherence of the carbon globules to each other and to the fiberglass substrate, an integrated carbon/insulator structure of a desired size and configuration for use in a primary electrochemical cell can be cut out from the abovedescribed arrangement.

    摘要: A structural lug comprising a metallic base, composite middle layers, and outer layers of metallic material is disclosed. The metallic base of the structure is machined to accommodate the composite plies, which are located on each lateral side of the base and bonded to the base with adhesive. The composite material may comprise an adhesive-based resin with embedded fibers. The metallic base may be formed to minimize peel stresses in the composite layers. The top metallic layers are fitted over and bonded to the composite plies and act as the outermost layers of the lug. The lateral ends of the lug where the top layers come into contact with the machined base may be joined together with friction stir welding or mechanical fasteners to form the completed structure.

    摘要: A metallic-composite joint is formed by inserting a metallic member into a slot of a pi-shaped composite preform. The preform is formed from woven carbon fiber in a binder of resin and may or may not be cured prior to assembly. An inert compliant layer is located between the legs of the preform and the metallic member. The resin binder or an adhesive is used to bond the compliant layer to the preform. The compliant layer has a coefficient of thermal expansion that more closely matches that of the preform. The properties of the compliant layer also avoid galvanic corrosion between the carbon in the preform and the metallic member.

    摘要: A three dimensional joint is formed by coupling (joining) a first structural member and a second structural member. This involves first aligning a first structural member to a second structural member. The first structural member has a channel with which to receive a portion of the second structural member. Certain embodiments may place corrosively inert materials within the mating surfaces to prevent or inhibit corrosion or oxidation. Once aligned, the first structural member and second structural member may be friction stir welded at the channel to plasticize the material adjacent to the channel of both the first structural member and the second structural member to form a friction stir weld joint. Embodiments may then coat the plasticized surfaces of the FSW joint with cold sprayed materials to inhibit corrosion. Should a crack occur within either the plasticized or non-plasticized materials, cold sprayed material may be deposited within and on the crack to retard or arrest the growth of the crack.
