The catalytic converter assembly (20) further includes supports (25) of various configurations and materials that extend radially between the inner and outer housings (21, 22).

    摘要: A thermally-activated exhaust treatment device, such as a catalytic converter (20) adapted to control exhaust emissions in a vehicle, includes a core having an inner housing (21) and a catalytic material (27) chosen to reduce undesirable emissions from the exhaust of a combustion engine. A jacket includes an outer housing (22) enclosing the inner housing (21) but characteristically not contacting the inner housing (21). The inner and outer housings (21, 22) include walls (30, 31) forming a vacuum-drawn sealed insulation cavity (26) around the inner housing (21). A chamber (60) positioned adjacent the inner housing (21) includes low melting point metal phase change material (61). A thermal management system is operably connected to the insulation cavity (26) that is constructed to control heat flow from the inner housing (21) to maximize the time the catalytic material (27) is within a predetermined optimum temperature operating range or limit catalyst maximum temperature.

    摘要: An acoustically improved, air gap engine exhaust conduit having a dual wall, air gap, metal exhaust conduit of an outer jacket and a thin inner liner, the jacket having at least one exhaust gas inlet and an exhaust gas outlet, the liner having at least one inlet and an outlet, the jacket inlet and the liner inlet being adjacent each other, the liner being secured to the jacket adjacent the jacket inlet and the liner inlet, the liner outlet being optionally in engagement with the jacket, and the liner otherwise being spaced from the jacket over its length to form a continuous air gap from the liner inlet to the liner outlet, a pattern of indentation ribs protruding into or out of the jacket over substantially all of said jacket, each indentation rib protruding toward or away from the liner, and terminating short of the liner to be spaced from and not in engagement with the liner, to maintain the continuous air gap. Optionally, the liner can have a pattern of indentation ribs protruding inwardly or outwardly and, if the latter, terminating short of the jacket so as not to engage the jacket and leave an air gap over the length thereof.

    摘要: A method for making catalytic converters with automated crack detection includes forming a rigid housing, providing a substrate shaped for reception in the housing, and forming a mat shaped to cover the exterior surface of the substrate and having a thickness which creates a tight friction fit between the substrate and the housing when the same are assembled. The mat is wrapped around the substrate, and the wrapped substrate is then stuffed into the housing using a reciprocating ram or the like that extends at a relatively constant speed. The stuffing force and the ram position are measured and recorded regularly to define an array of data. The data is analyzed for any abrupt changes in the stuffing force as a function of the ram position indicating a crack in the assembled substrate.

    摘要: A diesel exhaust filter construction includes a rectangular filter block, an elongated non-rectangular jacket with oval cross section, and support structure supporting the filter block in a center of the jacket. The support structure includes shielding components forming an insulating air gap with the jacket around the filter block (including a double-layered air gap in “hot” areas), and further includes support structure slidably supporting one end of the filter block to accommodate dissimilar thermal expansion. The structure further includes baffling components with angled surfaces directing input exhaust gases along efficient flow paths from an inlet cone into front, rear, and opposite sides of the filter block and further directing output exhaust gases from top and bottom sides of the filter block toward a longitudinally-centered outlet cone. Some components are identical is shape and size for use in different locations on the construction, thus simplifying tooling.

A second cylindrically-shaped housing member has a hollow interior in which the other one of the substrates is retained, a first end sealingly connected with the outlet end cap, and an opposite second end with a radially enlarged section sized to receive therein the second end of the first housing member, whereby the reduced section of the first housing member and the enlarge section of the second housing member are spaced radially apart a predetermined distance to define an annularly-shaped space or gap which thermally insulates the associated portion of the exhaust gas treatment device.
