The merge element includes one input track with a tip portion substantially facing the cusp portion of a second input track to form a merge region. An output track is associated with the merge region. In a preferred embodiment, the merge element is passive and does not have a conductor. In another embodiment, the merge element is active and does have a conductor.

The application of this material to a nondegenerate semiconductor may be made by the process of evaporation. The resulting contact is stable in the atmosphere, and is more electronegative than the best contact material, namely gold, that is now used.

    摘要: A data recording disk file is provided with a fixed block architecture sector format that eliminates the ID region. The servo region contains sector identification information in the form of a start-of-track indicating mark recorded in a selected sector of each track and a start-of-sector indicating mark recorded in each sector. A full track number identifier is encoded in the position field within the servo region of each sector. A look-up table is built at format time to map bad sectors out of the disk file. The table contains entries for each cluster of contiguous bad sectors, and is searched at runtime to provide conversion of logical sector location identifiers to physical sector location identifiers.

    摘要: A dual element magnetic transducer in which the thin film MR read element is transversely biased by flux in the air gap of the inductive write core generated by a bias current supplied to the write winding. Flux in the air gap biases the MR element because different integral portions of the MR element have a different spatial relationship to parallel opposing portions of the inductive core. The flux which would normally pass through the gap substantially normal to the sides of the core defining the gap now tends to follow the MR element along a direction normal or transverse to the media to a point where the distance between the MR element and the core is smaller than where it entered. By appropriate control of the bias current and the spatial relationships, a relatively efficient, simple to manufacture dual element magnetic transducer is provided.

    摘要: An arrangement of insulating, thermal absorbing and/or dissipating elements controlling heat flow between a member and its environment. In certain permafrost environments, for example, one or more elements of the system can include a heat sink and/or a thermal bleed where the member is heated. The arrangement controls heat flow from a heated member at such a rate that the total heat transfer does not exceed the limits of the residual heat capacity of permafrost below the freezing point thereof during cyclic climatic influences. The arrangement takes advantage of the fact that artificial heat from the heated member can be controlled, while natural solar heat is balanced by the seasons. The elements also serve to maintain relatively stable temperature differentials between heated or cryogenic materials and their adjacent ground support, so there is a minimal effect of one on the other.
