A new class of substituted 2,3-naphthalenedicarboxaldehydes (NDA) is disclosed. Such compounds are of the formula: ##STR1## wherein one or more of R.sub.1 -R.sub.8 are various substituting groups. The above compounds react, in the presence of cyanide ion, with compounds containing primary amino groups to form adducts which exhibit a high fluorescent yield and thus are readily detected and measured by fluorometric assaying techniques.

The instant invention is directed to a lipid osmotic pump, comprising:(A) a core, comprising:(i) a beneficial amount of at least one substantially water insoluble active agent which is lipid soluble and/or lipid wettable;(ii) a sufficient amount of at least one water immiscible lipid carrier, which is liquid at the temperature of intended use, to dissolve and/or suspend said active agent; and(iii) a sufficient amount of at least one osmotic agent to ensure release of said lipid carrier from the pump; and(B) surrounded by a water insoluble wall:(i) having a thickness of about 1 to 1000 microns;(ii) which is preferentially wetted by said lipid carrier over an aqueous solution of said osmotic agent;(iii) having a water permeability of about 1.times.10.sup.-18 to 4.times.10.sup.-15 cm.sup.3 sec/g;(iv) prepared from at least one polymer permeable to water but substantially impermeable to said osmotic agent; and(v) having a means for said active agent and lipid carrier to be released through said water insoluble wall.

The invention relates to the use of an acid anhydride incorporated as a latentiated catalyst in poly(ortho ester) and other polymers such that upon exposure to aqueous environments the acid anhydride generates the corresponding acid which catalyzes the matrix erosion. The releasing rate of a loaded drug substance incorporated into or surrounded by the poly(ortho ester) or other polymers can be controlled in that the drug is released as the poly(ortho ester)s or other polymer is eroded by action of the acid anhydride incorporated therein.

An intrauterine system for releasing beneficial agent to the uterus at a controlled and continuous rate for a prolonged period of time is disclosed. The system is shaped, sized and adapted for insertion and retention in the uterus. The system contains a beneficial agent and it is formed of a copolymeric material permeable to the passage of agent by diffusion. The material is an ethylene-vinyl ester polymer of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl of 2 to 7 carbons, or aryl, m is (4 to 80)% by weight and n is (100-m)% by weight.

Drug-delivery device for releasing a drug at a continuous and controlled rate for a prolonged period of time is comprised of a shaped body of polymeric material containing a pharmaceutically acceptable drug and permeable to passage of the drug by diffusion. The polymeric material is an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having a vinyl acetate content of about 4 to 80% by weight and a melt index of about 0.1 to 1000 grams per 10 minutes.

An osmotic active agent dispenser is comprised of a chamber having controlled permeability to an external fluid, i.e., water, and containing an osmotically effective solute which, in solution, exhibits an osmotic pressure gradient against said external fluid, said chamber housing a flexible bag of relatively impervious material containing an active agent and provided with means or dispensing head for releasing said active agent to the exterior of the dispenser. The flexible bag is disposed within the said housing chamber such that as the, e.g., water permeates from the external environment through the permeable walls of the chamber and migrates or diffuses by osmosis into the solution contained therein, same increases in volume thereby generating mechanical compressing or deflating force on the flexible bag, which force in turn ejects the active agent out of the apparatus at an osmotically controlled rate over a prolonged period of time.
