There is disclosed a process for the preparation of sulfenimides comprising: mixing, in a hydrocarbon solvent, a sulfenamide of the formula with an aldehyde of the formula R4CHO where X is a sulfur atom, a —C═N— group, or a —C═C— group, R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, and aryl or may be joined to form a saturated or unsaturated ring or aromatic ring, R3 is alkyl or cycloalkyl, and R4 is a hydrocarbon radical wherein the carbon bearing the aldehyde function is bonded only to other carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl ring, or a heteroaromatic ring; and heating the mixture at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to convert the sulfenamide to the sulfenimide.

A composition of matter is disclosed that comprises a compound of the formula AnR, wherein: A is R1 is hydrocarbyl; m is 0 or 1; n is 1, 2, or 3; R is selected from the group consisting of: mono-, di-, and trivalent aliphatic groups; mono-, di-, and trivalent aromatic groups; five- and six-membered heterocyclic rings comprising n carbon atoms bonded to A, at least one nitrogen atom, and, optionally, at least one sulfur atom; and wherein R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and hydrocarbyl. These compounds are useful as coupling agents in filled elastomer compositions.

The use of an inorganic liquid permits convenient separation of the alkylated reaction product from the reaction mixture.

A single-step process is disclosed for the ring alkylation of at least one N-alkyl-N′-phenyl-phenylenediamine with at least one olefin wherein the process comprises heating a mixture of the N-alkyl-N′-phenyl-phenylenediamine(s) and olefin(s) in the presence of a catalytic amount of at least one alkyl aluminum halide at a temperature of from about 50 to about 350° C. in a sealed vessel for from about one to about 30 hours.

Also disclosed are processes for forming such styrenated phenolic compositions, which processes afford distyrenated phenolics assaying at 70% minimum by total GC area, comprising reacting styrene with one or more phenolics, e.g., at least one of phenol, p-cresol and/or o-cresol, in the presence of an acid catalyst, preferably a sulfonic acid catalyst, at elevated temperature, wherein the resulting product mixture comprises one or more monostyrenated phenolics, one or more distyrenated phenolics, and one or more tristyrenated phenolics.
