    摘要: A web feeding, cutting and dispensing machine includes a pneumatic cylinder for moving a hot wire to cut measured-length sheets from web stock. A pneumatic clamp cylinder moves a clamp bar for momentarily clamping the web during cutting. Upon pressing a start button, a pneumatic control valve sequentially operates the respective cutting and clamping cylinders for quickly retracting the hot wire, while more slowly retracting the clamp. Conversely, after the next measured web length has advanced, this control valve again sequentially operates these two cylinders in reverse order for quickly clamping while slower cutting. This dual control by one valve is advantageously achieved (1) by throttling air flow in retracting the clamp cylinder relative to retracting the cut cylinder, and conversely (2) by throttling air flow in advancing the cut cylinder relative to advancing the clamp cylinder. A compact machine has a hollow movable clamp bar torque member for equally driving both clamp arms by one clamp cylinder at one side of the machine. This movable clamp bar also serves as a passageway containing a torque shaft for equally driving both cutting arms by one cut cylinder at the other side. A "floating" upper feed roll accommodates different thicknesses of foam web without requiring adjustment and enables a lower feed roll to rotate continuously regardless of whether the web is clamped or not. Each cut sheet is conveniently held by a holder ready for use and is gently removable from the holder.

    摘要: A pneumatically operated stapling apparatus and method for driving a staple into a workpiece whenever the workpiece is moved into a stapling position between a staple driver and a backing member. The method and apparatus are particularly suited for stapling difficult to handle workpieces of the type including a panel and a sheet of flexible material to be mounted thereon, and the method and apparatus are able to advantageously use a pneumatic stapling gun of a known type having a staple driving mechanism controlled by a valve plunger positionable either to advance the staple driver toward the backing member, or to retract the staple driver. A trigger element is positioned to be depressed by the workpiece as it is placed in the stapling position, and a pneumatic control means, actuated by depressing the trigger element, first positions the stapler control valve to cause the staple driver to advance and insert a staple into the workpiece and then, while the trigger element remains depressed, automatically changes the position of the stapler control valve to retract the staple driver away from the workpiece to thereby permit the workpiece to be removed from the stapling position to release the trigger element. The pneumatically operated stapling apparatus frees the hands for manipulation of the workpiece, e.g., for accurate placement of a sheet of material on a mounting panel, and allows a known reliable type of pneumatic stapler to be inexpensively adapted to perform a valuable new function.The pneumatic control means in the stapling apparatus and method comprises a pneumatic reservoir, a pneumatic actuator coupled to the stapler control valve to control the positioning thereof, and a valve connected to the trigger element. The valve connects the pneumatic air supply to the pneumatic reservoir when the trigger element is not depressed, and then connects the pneumatic reservoir, with its stored charge of compressed air, to the pneumatic actuator when the trigger element is depressed. The pneumatic circuit formed by the pneumatic reservoir and pneumatic actuator includes leakage means for reducing the pressure therein to restore the pneumatic actuator to its initial position to thereby revert the stapler control valve to its initial position for retraction of the staple driver. The pneumatic control means may include means to adjust the storage volume of the reservoir, and means to adjust the rate of leakage therefrom.

    摘要: An all-electric web feeding, cutting and sheet dispensing machine includes a bi-directional cutting knife on a reversible carriage driven by a reversible-rotation knife-drive shaft. The carriage includes a ball-bearing-wheeled linear actuator riding on the knife-drive shaft propelling the carriage along this shaft in cutting strokes in one or the other direction as this shaft is rotated in one or the other sense of rotation for cutting sheets off from a web of resilient packaging material. A combined knife-guard and clamp jaw (guard/clamp) holds the web and protects the moving knife from contact with foreign objects while the knife is traveling during each cutting stroke. At the end of each cutting stroke a cam on the knife carriage lifts the guard/clamp in readiness for feeding another length of web. The machine may be set for various operating modes: (1) automatic supply on demand by feeding and cutting of measured lengths of web triggered by an operator's removal of each previously cut sheet; (2) semi-automatic for feed and cut in response to manual actuation of a switch; (3) timed operation feeding and cutting of sheets at pre-set intervals of time; (4) selectable feeding and cutting of either of two different widths and/or two different types and/or two different thicknesses of web material coming from upper or lower feed rolls. The knife includes two sharp replaceable blades removably mounted tip-to-tip in the knife carriage with their cutting edges inclined downwardly in opposite directions from those adjacent tips.

    摘要: A web of foam material is fed to a cutting station by upper and lower rollers drawing the web from a supply roll and along a low-friction table surface. A cutter station has a knife bar and blade, with a clamp bar coupled with the knife bar. The lower draw roller has its axle mounted in a pair of pivoted arms depressible by presser feet on a presser foot bar carried by the knife bar. When a desired length of web has been drawn past the cutter station, actuation of the knife bar lowers the blade toward a grooved anvil, while the presser feet swing the arms down to depress the lower roller away from the web to stop drawing it. Immediately after interrupting drawing action, the web is clamped by the clamp bar, and then immediately thereafter cutting occurs. The table has bridge-like fingers extending downstream through grooves in the movable lower feed roller. These fingers support the web when the lower roller is swung down. The cut sheets are conveyed through a static eliminator and then pass between staggered corrugation rolls for temporarily imparting longitudinal stiffness for enabling the temporarily corrugated sheet to be longitudinally projected through the air for dispensing into a desired position of utility, for example landing in the open top of a box packed with delicate items.

    摘要: Fully automated method and apparatus are provided for labelling containers, including supplying and applying labels. A supply provides a web of preprinted labels which may be pre-perforated for easy separation. This web of labels is fed past a sensing device and an adhesive applicator. A clamp temporarily clamps the web in response to signals from the sensor during separation of the leading label from the web. The leading edge of each label is fed to a label-engaging station with the adhesive-coated surface facing the container to which it is to be applied. Conveyor means continually transport a sequence of individual containers to said station where the respective container contacts the adhesive-coated label end. Immediately, the container begins to be rolled in a labelling channel defined between a continuously revolving belt having a friction surface and an opposed stationary wall for wrapping the label firmly around the container rolling along this channel. Pinch means at the upstream end of this channel drive the respective container into firm contact with the adhesive-surface of the label end while pressing the outside of the label against the revolving belt, thereby commencing rolling the container within the channel. After a predetermined amount of wrapping, the web is temporarily clamped, and the label is separated from it. Following the label separation, the container continues to be rolled along the channel for completely wrapping the label securely. In an alternative embodiment, the label so wrapped may be heat sealed.

    摘要: Large diameter long rolls of soft, spongy resilient material, for example, such as "microfoam" padding and packaging material which are to be cut into narrower sub-rolls are positioned in a support frame having means for restricting the rotational movement of the roll in one direction in the frame. A long knife blade and its reciprocating drive are positioned on the frame and with the knife blade being initially tangentially disposed with respect to the periphery of the roll. The reciprocating drive is positioned for reciprocally driving and incrementally advancing the knife blade inward with the knife blade rotating the roll on the push stroke of the blade while cutting and advancing inward along an arc on the pull stroke of the reciprocating drive. Cutting is stopped when the edge of the blade is at a predetermined distance from the mandrel on which the core of the roll is mounted in order to protect the knife blade, and the core is then cut with a hand blade so that the sub-roll can be removed from the remainder of the roll. Neatly cut square ends are produced on the cut rolls. A convenient and effective means for restricting rotational movement of the roll in one direction is a strap anchored at one end to the frame and partially wrapped around the periphery of the roll with a weight suspended from the other end, thereby acting like a one-way clutch.
