There is provided a method for supporting a multicast service in an Ethernet passive optical network system. Since an Optical Network Unit (ONU) system monitors an IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) message and informs the monitored result of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) system so that the OLT system creates L2 multicast forwarding table using a multicast address and ONU ID information in a PON port, the ONU system transmits the multicast packet only to a corresponding subscriber on the basis of the L2 multicast forwarding table when receiving a multicast packet. Therefore, it is possible to transfer a multicast packet only to a specific ONU system belonging to a corresponding multicast address group among a plurality of ONU systems.

An apparatus and method for supporting quality of services (QoS) for respective subscriber classes for an Ethernet passive optical network (E-PON) are provided. The method for supporting QoS includes specifying bandwidths and subscriber classes for respective ports for a plurality of subscriber termination systems connected to a service provider termination system; based on the bandwidth information, allocating bandwidths for respective subscriber ports of the subscriber termination systems; based on the subscriber class information, assigning IP addresses to respective subscriber of the subscriber termination systems according to subscriber class; and by using the bandwidths and IP addresses, supporting QoS according to subscriber class in transmitting and receiving data between the service provider termination system and the subscriber termination systems.

A multiple shared LAN emulation method in an EPON based on a group ID is provided. A group ID (GID) is defined, and rules for processing an Ethernet frame are defined in each OLT and each ONU using a mode value, an LLID value, and a GID value so that a plurality of LANs are established in the EPON. Thus, a plurality of LANs are established in the OLT, and an independent network is provided to each of a plurality of service providers.

Disclosed herein is a shared Local Area Network (LAN) emulation method and apparatus. The method includes the following four steps. At the first step, a Logical Link Identifier (LLID) management table is set up to assign unique LLIDs to a plurality of Optical Network Units (ONUs) and manage the assigned LLIDs so as to identify the plurality of ONUs connected to a single Optical Line Terminal (OLT). Thereafter, a MAC address table is set up for the LLIDs to learn MAC addresses of the ONUs. Thereafter, the unique LLIDs are assigned to ONUs when the ONUs request registration from the OLT. Finally, data frames, which are received by a Shared LAN Emulation (SLE) layer of the OLT, are bridged using the LLIDs, VIDs of Virtual LANs to which the ONUs belong and destination MAC addresses of the data frames so as to provide a single matched port between a Logical Link Control (LLC) layer and a MAC layer of the OLT.

An apparatus for transmitting a FEC frame is provided. The apparatus includes: a selector determining whether to perform FEC encoding on data to be transmitted; a Reed-Solomon encoding assembler receiving the data on which FEC encoding is to be performed as determined by the selector, and dividing the data into k-byte message blocks (k is a positive integer) for output; a Reed-Solomon encoder receiving the message blocks and performing Reed-Solomon encoding on the message blocks; and an output controller receiving an input parity generated by the Reed-Solomon encoding, and outputting the message block and the parity sequentially or outputting the data on which FEC encoding is not to be performed as determined by the selector. In order to correct an error caused by a transmission medium using FEC in a Reed-Solomon code type, FEC encoding/decoding of a frame is performed. A total transmission delay time is not influenced when FEC is bypassed, a delay caused by a shortened codeword is minimized, and a FEC encoding/decoding delays for frames having different lengths are equalized.
