This invention relates to new diisocyanates containing urea groups which are liquid at room temperature or can be liquefied by heating to a temperature of up to 80.degree. C. These novel diisocyanates may be in the form of solutions in isocyanate prepolymers. The invention also is directed to a process for preparation of these new diisocyanates by the reaction of special diisocyanate starting materials and water and to their use as components for the production of polyurethanes.

Polyurethane urea elastomers are produced by reacting polyisocyanates with compounds containing at least two isocyanate reactive hydrogen atoms having a molecular weight of 400 to 10,000 and mononuclear or dinuclear aromatic diamines. The aromatic diamines must have at least one sulfonamide group as a substituent on at least one of their aromatic rings. Known chain lengthening agents, activators, blowing agents, auxiliary agents and additives may also be included in the reaction mixture.Polyurethane elastomers produced by this process have excellent mechanical properties. In particular, such elastomers are soft yet have high tear propagation resistance.

The invention is directed to new sulfur-containing diisocyanates in which a mercapto, sulfoxo or sulfone group joins two aromatic nuclei together or joins an aromatic nucleus to an aliphatic group and in which at least one of the aromatically bound isocyanate groups is in the ortho-position to the sulfur atom. The invention is also directed to a process for the preparation of these new sulfur-containing diisocyanates and to their use in the isocyanate polyaddition process for the production of polyurethanes.

The instant invention is directed to a process for the production of polyurethane urea elastomers having a gross density of more than 200 kg/m.sup.3 comprising: casting a reaction mixture of(A) an isocyanate prepolymer produced from(a) 1 mole of a compound containing at least 2 Zerewitinoff-active hydrogen atoms and having a molecular weight of from 400 to 10,000 and(b) 2 to 10 moles of diisocyanatodiphenylmethane,(B) an aromatic diamine, and(C) 0 to 50 mole percent, based on component (B), of a polyol containing primary hydroxyl groups and having a molecular weight of from 62 to 6000, the equivalent ratio between component (A) and components (B) + (C) amounting to between 0.9:1 and 1.3:1,into a mold, hardening the reaction mixture in the mold and subsequently removing it from the mold, the improvement wherein said isocyanate prepolymer (A) has been produced using an isomer mixture comprising:from 15 to 80 mole percent of 2,4'-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane,from 20 to 85 mole percent of 4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane, andfrom 0 to 20 mole percent of 2,2'-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane.
