In a servo-assisted steering system which is intended for motor vehicles, a steering valve (1) is provided for controlling the pressure fluid. The steering valve (1) has two intake seat valves (7, 8) and two outlet seat valves (10, 11), which are adjustable via an actuating device (23) as a function of a rotary motion of a steering shaft. In the neutral position of the steering valve (1), the outlet seat valves (10, 11) are closed. The intake seat valves (7, 8) can be acted upon in the closing direction by the force of compression springs (13) and are not opened until after the closure of the respective associated outlet seat valve (10, 11). One limiting piston (24) is provided for each side of the steering valve (1). Each limiting piston (24) is acted upon on one side by the pressure prevailing in the work chamber (3, 4) of a servomotor (5) and on the other by a limiting spring (25), which in the neutral position of the steering valve (1) keeps the limiting piston (24) at a distance from the closure body (12) of the intake seat valve (8). If the force of the pressure acting upon the limiting piston (24) exceeds the force of the limiting spring (25), the limiting piston (24) is applied to the closure body (12) of the intake seat valve (8) and acts upon it. With such an arrangement a "cutoff or actuating moment limitation" is attained.

A servomotor (11) is operationally connected with steering rack (6) for auxiliary power support. Pinion (2) is positioned swingably in a fixed bearing (3) and a loose bearing (4). In the area of loose bearing (4), there are arranged two control valves (26, 27) whose axes are essentially perpendicular to the axis of pinion (2). Loose bearing (4) is guided in a movable fashion in steering housing (1), perpendicularly with respect to its axis only in the direction of the axes of the two control valves (26, 27). In this steering-rack-equipped auxiliary power steering, one can make sure that to activate the control valves, one will not use the axial forces that act upon pinion (2) but rather the lateral forces. As a result, the activation of the control valves is independent of the helix angle or slope angle of the pinion gearing.

A Servosteering system especially for motor vehicles utilizes a piston type of control valve having reaction chambers for simulating steering resistance in the course of a turn. Communication for pressure flow to the reaction chambers is via fixed throttle in series with a speed responsive variable throttle which at low speeds reduces the simulated steering resistance to low or nonexistent, as in parking, but varying to higher steering resistance at higher speeds. Additionally, a pressure reduction valve is series connected with the fixed throttles. Reaction chamber pressure is thus held to a maximum so that simulated steering resistance, is comfortable in a tight turn.

A servosteering control valve is provided with fluid reaction chambers which are pressued responsive to the speed of a vehicle for effecting a simulated steering resistance wherein at low speed, as in parking, there is no steering resistance and resistance increases with speed via feedback from the chambers of a double acting servomotor. The novel feature of the arrangement herein utilizes a coaction between the inlet flow control passage and return flow control passage of a steering control spool or piston valve, one such valve for each chamber. This is in conjunction with throttle passages disposed between the manually shiftable piston valves and a valve housing. Such passages are created by portions of the shiftable valves having elements slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the housing bore or bores in which the valves are shiftable. A single bore is used where the valves are coaxially integral and respective bores are used where the valves are separably movable. The arrangement places the throttle passages in flow series between the servomotor chambers and the reaction chambers. The effect of the throttle passages and their relationship with the inlet and return flow control passages results in pressure control of the reaction chambers such that at low speeds the simulated steering resistance is low or non-existent, as in parking, but varying to higher resistance at higher speeds.

A feed pressure bypass valve means and actuator means primarily for a single acting servomotor, is provided having a unitary housing construction and an assembly of opposed springs wherein one spring biases a bypass valve to closed position and the other spring is compressed by the servometer piston to act in the opposite direction. The bypass valve is mounted externally of the servomotor as a separate and integral unit and has for its purposes to ensure maintaining a drop in feed pressure as the piston nears the end of its stroke. The provision of the spring compressed by the piston toward the end of the stroke ensures the opening and maintenance of opening of the bypass valve. There can be no instability of steering operation by virtue of the bypass valve closing and the striking of the servomotor cylinder wall by the piston is precluded.
