The control system disclosed herein regulates a centrifugal compressor which has inlet guide vanes adjustable to vary the compressor capacity. A variable speed motor is connected to drive the compressor, and variation of this motor speed provides another input for regulating the compressor capacity. A control system achieves optimum energy efficiency, while avoiding surge, by the manner in which the motor speed and the inlet guide vane positions are regulated. To do this, a control signal must be derived to indicate the compressor head value. This signal is achieved by providing two signals, one related to the absolute condenser pressure, and the second related to the absolute evaporator pressure. The control system operates on these two signals to provide a third signal which is a function of a ratio, in which the numerator is the difference between the condenser and evaporator pressures, and the denominator is the evaporator pressure. Alternative measurement and processing techniques are described. This signal affords a very good indication of the compressor head and thus achieves increased efficiency of system operation, with consequent energy conservation, especially at lighter loads and low heads.

An evaporator inlet water temperature control system for controlling the inlet water temperature of an evaporator utilized in an inverter driven centrifugal chiller. The system creates the proper chilled water set point at the evaporator outlet needed to maintain the inlet water at its set point for greater efficiency of operation. Control is accomplished by generating an electrical error signal which is a function of an inlet water set point voltage and the actual inlet water temperature. A logic signal is produced as a function of the error signal detected by the circuit and establishes a dead zone band representing a range in which the error signal is acceptable. Output of the control system is passed to the capacity control circuit of an inverter driven centrifugal compressor chiller. When the inlet water temperature reaches its set point during pull-down, the logic output of the circuit sets a flip-flop which enables transmission gates to control changes in the outlet water set point as needed to balance the load of the cooling system.

The present invention is directed to a power transformer and VSD mounted on the chiller equipment. The transformer is preferably a liquid-filled transformer rated for medium/high voltage input, and at least two output low voltages, one voltage for the VSD and other power equipment, and another voltage for the control panel and control equipment. The placement of the power transformer on the chiller eliminates the need to allocate additional floor space for an auxiliary transformer or medium/high voltage VSD. The transformer also includes cooling means in the form of a heat exchanger in which the liquid is cooled by circulating condenser water, chilled water or refrigerant from the chiller system. The cooling means may also be connected to cooling coils connected to the VSD. The size of the power transformer is significantly reduced by the use of the chiller system to remove heat from the transformer while in operation, thereby maintaining the ambient temperature rise of the transformer within its rated operating temperature range. The transformer and VSD heat is discharged to the outside ambient eliminating additional cooling requirements for the equipment room.

The power delivered from a three-phase A-C power source and through a network of SCR's (connected, for example, to form a full wave rectifier bridge or to provide an A-C switch) to a load circuit is adjusted by controlling the conduction angles of the SCR's. The control is achieved by developing, from only one of the three alternating phase voltages provided by the A-C power supply, a reference square wave signal of the same frequency and whose amplitude excursions are precisely synchronized or keyed to the zero voltage crossings of the selected phase voltage, even though that phase voltage may include undesired harmonics, noise, transients or other distortion components. Since the influence of the undesired signal components has now been eliminated and since the reference square wave signal also has a fixed phase relationship with the other two phase voltages, logic circuitry may be controlled by the reference square wave signal, and by a d-c control voltage representing a desired power flow to the load circuit, to produce gating signals for triggering the SCR's into conduction at the angles required to translate the desired power to the load circuit. With this arrangement, control of all three phases is made immune to undesired signal components in any of the phase voltages.

A single medium voltage starter box is mounted on a chiller unit with the other components of the chiller system. The starter box can be positioned on the chiller system unit to permit the starter box to be close coupled to the motor, and specifically to the main motor lead exit hub without the need for any power conduit connections between the starter box and the motor. In addition, the starter box also does not require any control interface and receives controls from a control panel. A short conduit connection between the control panel and the starter box is used to provide the necessary connections between the control panel and the starter box.
