摘要: An improvement in a method of extruding a plasticized powder mixture having a thermally gellable binder carried in an aqueous vehicle, by passing the mixture through an extruder and then through a die to produce an extrudate, the improvement being the additional step of contacting the extrudate directly after it leaves the die with an agent for simultaneously lowering the gel point of the binder and dehydrating the extrudate. The result is a stiffening of the extrudate in a shorter time than it would be, absent the additional step.

摘要: A method for extruding a stiffer powder mixture at lower extrusion pressure involves providing an aqueous mixture of inorganic powder that can be metal, ceramic, glass, glass ceramic, molecular sieve, and/or carbon, fatty acid the main chain of which has at least 12 carbon atoms, thermally gellable cellulose ether binder, and wax that can be paraffin and/or propylene glycol hydroxystearate, wherein the powder is coated with the fatty acid component. If clay is included in the mixture, it is provided as either calcined or hydrous. The mixture is passed through an extruder and through an extrusion die to produce a green extrudate at an extrusion pressure that is equal to or lower than it would be absent the combination of the fatty acid, the cellulose ether binder, and the wax. The mixture in the extruder and the extrudate are stiffer than without this combination.

摘要: Fiber-reinforced, ceramic composite articles are manufactured by contacting inorganic reinforcing fibers with liquid dispersions containing powders of the ceramic matrix materials and an organic binder. The organic binder is a water-soluble polymer. The fibers coated with the ceramic powders are contacted with a cross-linking agent which reacts with binder to form a gel.

摘要: A laser system includes a series coupled laser diode pair, first and second current regulators, and a power supply. The first current regulator controls current supplied to the laser diode pair. The second current regulator selectively diverts a portion of the supplied current away from a first laser diode of the laser diode pair. The power supply adaptively adjusts a level of a supply voltage applied across the series coupled laser diode pair.

摘要: A method for fabricating optical devices for transmission and/or manipulation of light includes steps of providing a substrate which defines a reference plane for positioning cladding material and core material, fixing rigid spacers to an upper surface of the substrate, the spacers having upper surfaces which define a second plane spaced above the reference plane, depositing a layer of a formable, curable under-cladding material over the upper surface of the substrate, the upper surface of the rigid spacers providing a guide for precise control of the height of the under-cladding material above the surface of the substrate, curing the under-cladding material under compression to form an under-cladding layer, and depositing a light guide core and over-cladding on the under-cladding. The method is susceptible to mass production and provides more precise control of the position of the light guide core relative to a substrate surface. The resulting optical device includes a substrate, a pattern of rigid spacers fixed to the upper surface of the substrate, a polymeric under-cladding layer positioned on the substrate and in space defined between the rigid spacers, a polymer light guide core positioned on the under-cladding layer, and a polymeric over-cladding layer positioned over the light guide core and at least a portion of the under-cladding.

摘要: The present invention relates to a radiation curable ink formulation which has a tan .delta. of from about 0.5 to about 1.5. The radiation curable ink formulation includes a pigment, a radiation cross-linkable monomer or oligomer, and a rheology modifier. Flat panel color filters which contain a black radiation curable ink formulation and one or more colored radiation curable ink formulations are also disclosed. At least one of the black and colored radiation curable ink formulations has a tan .delta. of from about 0.5 to about 1.5 and includes a pigment, a radiation cross-linkable monomer or oligomer, and a rheology modifier. Methods for manufacturing these flat panel color filters are also disclosed. The radiation curable ink formulations of the present invention have the advantage of permitting clean doctoring. When used with black pigments to produce a raised black matrix surface pattern on a transfer layer, intrusion of the black ink into the areas occupied by colored inks is minimal, thus producing flat panel color filters with reduced haze when compared to previously-known flat panel color filters. Also described is a radiation curable formulation containing a radiation cross-linkable monomer or oligomer; a photoinitiator selected from the group consisting of 2-benzyl-2-dimethylamino-1-(4-morpholinophenyl)-butan-1-one, 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl diphenyl phosphine oxide, bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phenyl phosphine oxide, and combinations thereof; and chloropropoxythioxanthone. The radiation curable formulation has exceptionally high cure rate.

摘要: A color filter for an AMLCD panel has a pattern of multi-color dots, each dot having red, green, and blue components in a black matrix. Each component is the cured product of a color pigment dispersed in a radiation-curable ink. The ink may be an ink curable by a cationic mechanism, a free-radical ink, or a hybrid, free-radical/cationic ink. The filter is produced by successively applying patterns of colored inks to a transfer roll, collecting the patterns on a collector roll to form an array of multi-color dots that is transferred to the substrate, and irradiating the array of dots to at least partially cure the inks.
