摘要: There is provided a temperature change element for use in personal care products where the temperature change element has a reactive component and a gel-forming agent. Upon exposure to liquids such as urine, the temperature change element will change in temperature substantially, thus letting the wearer know that he has urinated. The temperature change element may also have a binder to help keep the ingredients together and may have a colorant to further alert the user that the personal care product has been wetted

摘要: A personal wear article capable of alerting a wearer to the wearer's release of liquid body exudates. The article includes an absorbent structure and a wetness indicator adapted to receive said liquid body exudates. The wetness indicator stiffens as it absorbs the liquid body exudates and applies a tactile sensation against the wearer's skin. The wetness indicator is positioned relative to a portion of the absorbent structure having an absorbent capacity gradient such that the absorbent capacity of the absorbent structure increases as the absorbent structure extends generally from the position of the wetness indicator in a direction generally away from the position of the wetness indicator. In another embodiment, the article includes a temperature change agent responsive to the liquid body exudates to change the temperature of the liquid body exudates to thereby facilitate a temperature change sensation against the wearer's skin.

摘要: A membrane-based assay device for detecting the presence or quantity of an analyte residing in a test sample is provided. The device utilizes conjugated probes that contain a specific binding member for the analyte of interest. The specific binding member preferentially complexes with the analyte within a test sample when contacted therewith. Excess analyte that remains uncomplexed with the specific binding member undergoes non-specific binding, such as to a hydrophobic domain. As a result, the ability of the uncomplexed analyte to compete with the complexed analyte at the detection zone of the device is restricted. Thus, the incidence of nullfalse negativesnull is limited in a simple, efficient, and relatively inexpensive manner.

摘要: An internal, self-calibrated system for flow-through assay devices is provided. In particular, the present invention employs the use of a single calibration/detection zone defined by a porous membrane of the assay. It has been discovered that the internal, self-calibrated system provides an accurate, inexpensive, and readily controllable method of determining the presence of an analyte in a test sample.

摘要: The current invention concerns new bioadhesive polymers incorporated with biodegradable components. The bioadhesive components used are polycarboxylic acids, while the biodegradable components can be any synthetic degradable polymers, particularly biodegradable polyesters whose degradation products are small molecular esters. The two polymer components may be covalently bound to each forming graft, block or random copolymers, examples of which include poly(acrylic acid)-graft-poly(lactic acid) (PAA-g-PLA) and pol(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-g-poly(acrylic acid) (PLGA-g-PAA). The two components may also be incorporated into one material by forming non-covalent interpolymer complex via, for examples, hydrogen bonding, ionic bonding or hydrophobic bonding. Typical examples in this category include the hydrogen bonding interpolymer complex formed between poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(lactic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic acid) tri-block copolymers. The new materials may be used without a treatment agent to provide a lasting acidic pH environment or used with a treatment agent as a delivery system.

摘要: A membrane-based assay device for detecting the presence or quantity of an analyte residing in a test sample is provided. The device utilizes a chromatographic zone on which is disposed a plurality of microporous particles. The chromatographic zone can effectively reduce the nullhook effectnull in a simple, efficient, and relatively inexpensive manner. In particular, the plurality of microporous particles allows larger-sized analyte/probe complexes to reach the detection zone before the uncomplexed analyte. Because the uncomplexed analyte is substantially inhibited from competing with the complexes for the binding sites at the detection zone, the incidence of nullfalse negativesnull may be limited, even at relatively high analyte concentrations.
