The rotation preventing/thrust bearing device includes a discrete fixed portion, a discrete orbital portion and bearing elements. The fixed portion includes a first race and first ring both of which are formed separately. The first race is placed in a first groove in an inner surface of the housing and the first ring is attached to the housing. The orbital portion includes a second race and second ring both of which are formed separately. The second race is placed in a second groove in an end plate of the orbiting member and the second ring is attached to the end plate of the orbiting member. A plurality of pockets of the rings face one another in generally aligned pairs. A bearing element is received in each aligned pair of pockets to prevent the rotation of the orbiting member by the bearing elements interacting with the first and second rings and to carry the axial thrust load from the orbiting member. The first and second races are placed within the first and second annular grooves respectively in order to be able to circumferentially and radially move within a restricted range.

The chamber is divided into a compression chamber and a discharge chamber by a valve plate. A discharge hole links the compression chamber to the discharge chamber. The valve plate includes an end surface which faces the discharge chamber. A discharge valve regulates a flow of the refrigerant gas from the compression chamber to the discharge chamber. A valve retainer limits the bending movement of the discharge valve in the direction in which the refrigerant gas exits the discharge hole. The valve retainer is secured to an axial end surface of the valve plate together with the discharge valve by a fixing bolt. The discharge valve bends as it opens and closes the discharge hole. The valve plate includes an annular groove formed at the end surface thereof. The annular groove surrounds the discharge hole and is entirely overlaid by the discharge valve. Also, an air gap may be formed between the discharge valve and the valve plate. Thereby, noise due to resonant vibration caused by the discharge valve can be effectively reduced or eliminated.

A scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. A driving mechanism includes a drive shaft which is rotatably supported by the compressor housing. A crank pin eccentrically extends from an inner end of the drive shaft and is drivingly coupled to a bushing. The bushing has a central axis which is offset from the central axes of the drive shaft and the crank pin. The bushing transmits orbital motion to the orbiting scroll thereby developing line contacts between the spiral elements. A first line can be defined passing through the central axis of the drive shaft and the central axis of the bushing, a second line can be defined passing through the central axis of the bushing and perpendicular to the first line, and a third line can be defined between the central axis of the bushing and the central axis of the crank pin. As the bushing rotates about the crank pin, a reaction force due to the compressed gas is exerted on the central axis of the bushing. When abnormal reaction forces due to the compressed gas are exerted on the central axis of the bushing, a control mechanism reduces the angle between the second line and the third line. Thus, the sealing forces between the fluid respond to changes in compressor output and anti-wearing of the surfaces of the spiral elements can be assured.

This invention is directed to a wobble plate type refrigerant compressor. The compressor includes a housing having a cylinder block provided with a plurality of peripherally located cylinders, a front end plate and a crank chamber enclosed by the front end plate and the cylinder block. A piston is slidably fitted within each of the cylinders. A drive shaft is connected to a rotor which is connected to a slant plate. A wobble plate is disposed on an inclined surface of the slant plate. A connecting rod connects the wobble plate within each of pistons. Each end of the connecting rod is coupled to the wobble plate and the piston by a ball-and-socket joint, respectively. The ball-and-socket joints provided at the wobble plate are peripherally located. A rotation preventing device for preventing rotation of the wobble plate includes a fork-shaped slider attached to an outer peripheral end of the wobble plate and a sliding rail held between the cylinder block and the front end plate. The center of the ball-and-socket joints provided at the wobble plate are radially shifted in the rotational direction of the cam rotor with respect to the center of ball-and-socket joints provided at each of the pistons by a predetermined angle; thereby preventing a cyclic collision between the fork-shaped slider and the sliding rail when the cam rotor rotates.

A second anti-friction thrust bearing assembly is mounted between the inclining surface of the inclined rotor member and the end surface of the wobble plate member facing the inclining surface of the inclined rotor member. The second anti-friction thrust bearing assembly comprises first and second annular race members and an annular rolling element cage assembly. The first annular race member is fixedly disposed on the end surface of the wobble plate member, and the second annular race member is disposed on the inclining surface of the inclined rotor member.

The stroke volume of the pistons changes according to the variation of the angle of the angle of the inclined plate. The elongated hole is formed so that the top clearance of the piston is a minimum when the angle of the inclined plate is largest, and the top clearance of the piston is a maximum when the angle of the inclined plate is smallest. The elongated hole is oriented in a manner that while the range of the inclined angles of the inclined plate is small, the capacity range variance for the compressor is large.

A slant plate type compressor, such as a wobble plate type compressor, with a variable displacement mechanism for use in a refrigeration circuit is disclosed. Two passageways communicate between the crank chamber and the suction chamber in the cylinder block. A bellows is disposed in a first passageway and controls communication between the crank chamber and the suction chamber in the first passageway. The bellows operates in accordance with the crank chamber pressure. A control valve is disposed in the second passageway and controls communication between the crank chamber and the suction chamber in the second passageway in response to signal from an external sensor. This configuration enables the compressor to be operated at maximum capacity when the refrigeration circuit is turned on until the temperature in the passenger compartment of a car reaches a desired temperature without input from the pressure in the crank chamber. After the temperature in the passenger compartment of the car reaches the desired temperature, the compressor operation is controlled by the bellows based on the crank chamber pressure. Therefore, the cooling characteristics of the compressor are improved and the temperature in the passenger compartment of the car can be controlled better.
